  • This could happen at any track...

Don't ever think you are completely safe at ANY racetrack. This could've been a major disaster. luckily, it wasn't.

It looks like for once the track was lucky to have a poor fan count. There was even a good fence in place. Not like the chicken wire I have seen at some places. Thats scary man.

Wow, there was certainly some luck there. You notice the one spectator took off running, holding his drink and leaving his girl behind?

It would appear that there is no cable along the top of the fence and possibly no anchor post for the cable. At Ocala a few weeks ago a winged sprint rolled into the front stretch fence up high and only the upper cables stopped him from going over. These cables are anchored by 6 inch post every so often along the fence so they don't stretch out when hit. The sprint left a big hole in the chain link and broke a 3 inch post. No one was hurt and the driver walked away.
Also a shock to see the number '76' on that MOD, like my number. Not many '76' cars out there....none in NASCAR at all.

              Yo Jimbo

Your right about having a catch cable...
A chain link fence is only as strong as it WEAKEST link... BUT with a cable (or two) running along it and secured properly, there is more of a chance a car will be held back. I've seen several cars caught be a cable.
One person sitting just to the left of that car just sat there and as the crowd ran up, the person appeared to lean to their right a bit... perhaps to drain the fluid out of their socks.

I watched that crash about 6 times and I didn't see any catch wire snap.
Some of the tracks that I have been to have a #4 catch wire and not anchored at all. At CCMP last year we had Wendy Matthais flip over the fence in turn one. I should say thru the fence. The week before there had been 1/2 dozen people there watching the races. Thank God they weren't there this night. There was a porta potty there and the front of her car hit it. Not hard but moved it several feet. If someone had been in it they would have had a heart attack. Some of these tracks worry me in the way they think about saftey. Bob...

I looked at it a few more times and i looks kinda like the car went over the 2 catch wires. There was none up top...

Point in case Cochran speedway in Ga. No fence between the track and the pits on the outside of the turn. Tire comes off hits woman and kills her. track is closed while the GA insurance commission investigates. Word from some friends say the track will probably never re open under current ownership

Yeah Kevin I worked at a track for 23 years and shot video from a stand where there was no fence, just the wall. I got hit a few times with flying parts. One time 2 cars got together comeing down the back straight and
another hit them and somebody lost a wheel. It went right over my head.
I didn't realize how close till I was told later. I never worried about it till the last few years. I guess I got a little smarter in my old age. Another time in a Kiss race, do you remember the old kiss series. 2 guys got together in the back straight and they both came into the wall right in front of me parts and fire went on both sides but nothing hit me. I got a killer shot. Bob...

What was he supposed to do. With that much behind he couldn't have carried her!

Yea, two things I noticed, no top cable and the wall is overlaps the fence by about a foot. I wonder if the fence is even tall enough to begin with. My guess is not.

                          Scary stuff.

I drove to Screven Motor Speedway, Saturday, for the O'reilly SAS race only to find out it was cancelled that morning because they were afraid no one would be able to get gas to come to the track. I noticed at that track, on the outside of turns 3 and 4 there is a house at the bottom of the drop off. If something like this happened, they would have a car in their kitchen.
My grandson and me came back to GIS for their race Saturday night. My grandson and some other boys will get die-cast cars and run them back and forth on the bottom rows of seating at the track. Scarry.
Something I noticed at GIS Saturday night. That old hippie with the camera needs a haircut.

One thing at a time, we just got him to wear shoes during the week. He used to only wear em' on Sunday's.
That same hippy character can be seen at tracks all over the place... heck, I just ran into him a few weeks ago myself (didn't have me gun with me).
