  • A story here!

A old racing buddy of mine Jim Kelly is here with me and he brought his picture albums with him. He has a treasure trove of pics. This #45 was set to run at Golden Gate in 1971 and when they loaded it on the trailer they discovered the head gasket was leaking. Jim said well we are done. Russ banard another friend said lets load Toms car, Tom Post, He ka=ept it in the same garage, and Tom was on vacation. Jim said, he ain't gonna like that. Russ said he ain't Gonna know. So they loaded the car and Jim won the feature with it. Bob...

                    That would be.....

                    John "Sugarbear" Berg

Don't know how he got that nickname but do remember he was pretty portly.

But he did win a lot the first couple of years in the late models at the Bay. Can't remember who owned the car but it was number 500. Then Bobby Alexander came back from his 5 year, time-out deal and made the switchover to dirt in the Harry Crouse ride. Other notables were Terry Decaire (Troy's dad), John Gamble, Spencer Buzbee, Frank Johnson, David Smith, Dick Nelson and Buzzie and Cagle when they came around plus a bunch of others.....in the Super Sixes you had Wayne Overstreet, James Albritton, Harry Parmenter, Rick Ragan (in the little Dodge Colt), etc.....and I remember a guy who won a lot in the Thundercars who later made the jump to Late Models....David Schmauss in the 1.5(anybody remember THAT paint scheme?)

man...those were some good times. I had never been to a dirt track other than the old fairgrounds track to watch the IMCA sprinters during the state fair. I couldn't understand why Dad wanted to go race on the dirt. One race was all it took for me. Then I couldn't understand why he wanted to go back to asphalt when Desoto opened up....lol.

Keep posting the old pics Jim/Bob....I love em.
