Wheelman Series on Dirt

Unknown Sportsman Crewchief--"Yeah, um, crank about 16 rounds into all four jackbolts, and strap that old cylinder head onto the right rear framerail. Now, how do we get the left rear wheel to tuck under the driver's seat again...?"
We does like their dirt nosecones, though.
I would like to see the Wheelman Series at both Bronson & Bithlo, pending appropriate funding.
Speaking of which, E.J. of American Auto and Tire in New Smyrna Beach, has chosen to fund the Sportsman class at NSS, as opposed to a car.

Food for thought for those considering spending advertising $$ on racing with some expectations of Return On Investment.Last edited by OldSchool+; 11-08-2018, 01:48 PM.

I don't know for sure but I think Wheelman already pays their own purse.
I'll bet Hoosier Tire would be happy to sell a 100+ tires (based on 24 cars)
Wheelman does a good job at promoting their series already so I don't see that as being a problem.
I guess we'll see when the 2019 Wheelman Series schedule comes out because Bronson doesn't post a schedule anymore- she puts something on facepage every now and then.
and the beat goes on

Seems to me the type of car has nothing to do with dust.
Barney may nonetheless be onto something here...
I am not a dirt guy, but have been to dirt tracks here and there all my life.
Used to go to East Bay perhaps twice a year and there was good, side-by-side, unpredictable racing.
Now they wallow around, mostly wide open, and mostly single file. Heaven help the guy that gets clipped, handling is about like a drunken slinky. Every now and then someone gets the cushion right and blows by the field--3 car-widths higher than the rest of 'em.
Further, back in the day you did see cars successfully run dirt and asphalt. And let's not forget Balough set up the Batmobile like an asphalt car to run the bottom at Syracuse.
Really, I wish they would mandate a 20 year old setup with stiffer springs and a left rear wheel that would stay in place--more like RacerBarney's asphalt cars. Maybe a thought for a Sportsman class.
Speaking of Barney, here is a Mayberry conspirasist:

Syracuse was the closest thing to asphalt you're going to see a dirt track get, other then the holes that seemed to open up the final few years.

Fair enough.
My larger point remains, however. Somehow current dirt rules have dialed out good racing, imo.Last edited by OldSchool+; 01-02-2019, 03:38 PM.

On the reverse side of that
Sandusky Speedway in Ohio ran their annual Hangover race on New year's day. I caught some live video on Facebook and it looked to be dominated mainly by dirt late models giving it a go on Sandusky's half mile pavement. The Gentry's ran one event for dirt lates in their first year taking over at 4-17.Only a half dozen came that night at Punta Gorda but in the feature they ran four wide through turn two(and never wrecked each other) They did it on a few days notice.Somebody should try that again with a little more lead time. The racing was pretty wild really for only a half dozen cars.sigpic

Not the Wheelman Series but Late Models
According to the NSS website schedule they are racing Dirt Late Models on March 2.
I wish the track wasn't so far away, I'd like to see what kind of show they put on.
As a side note, I remember about some 20 years ago Columbia had the National Late Model Sportsman dirt cars race there a couple times.
But I'm getting so old I can't really remember if it was a good race or not LoL
