35 SLM, standing room only in the grandstands, and a massive crowd in the pits. And all this under an afternoon of threatening skies. It came together without a drop of rain, and best of all, the on-track action was outstanding.
Some drivers went home frustrated with their cars, maybe with their competitors, or just with their luck, but I suggest that not one of them was disappointed by that racing surface or the action that took place.
Citrus has their own version of the restart shuffle, and I have to say that it added a lot of excitement and interest. Clearly, the outside lane was the way to go on the restarts, BUT the leader does NOT have the option to take it. The second place car always gets the outside, and most of the time they parlayed it into a lead change. How many lead changes were there in tonight's 100 lapper? 10? 15? I've rarely seen a race like that.
The re-starts shook things up, but the cars could pass under green too. The net effect was a revolving door toward the front of the pack where drivers would surge and fade, then surge again. Neri, Sergi, Anderson, Dutilly, Grimm, Mcleod and others starred in this spectacle, and for the most part, drove each other very cleanly.
It was an excellent race, and in front of the biggest Saturday night that I've seen in Florida for many moons.
What happened to the Pure Stock feature? Were they going too long? Those antique Montes were putting on a fine race, but it looks like the time restraint must have kicked in.
Yes, I also have a list of problems that need attention. Anyone who was there knows the things that went wrong, but lets not jump on the track tonight. They deserve to celebrate what I hope and believe was a business and entertainment success.
