"That man right there is the best sprint car driver in the whole ---damned country!" 1974- Indianapolis- AJ Foyt pointing out Jan Opperman in the garage.
Stan Schoff was one hell of a car owner, and had some of the best shoes in the country in his cars... I've personally seen Jeff Gordon, Jack Hewitt, Frankie Kerr, and If I'm not mistaken, Barry Camp in his cars. There were a bunch of others too. Am I mistaken here... Isn't Frankie, David Reutimann's crew chief?
The people (like Tripper and HaudFan) that KNOW sprint car racing, will put him in the same class as Bob Weikert, Al Hamilton, Casey Luna, Dennis Roth, Bob Stewart, Dan Motter, Carl Harz, Gil Sonner... all these guys got a kick out of being behind the scenes, providing some of the most bad-ass Sprint cars in the country.
True story here... I met Al Harrison (another car owner) one night at VSP, and asked for his autograph. He said "It's not MY autograph you want....the driver is right over there". My reply was "Every year you bring a car down here (Fla) , and if it wasn't for owners like YOU, there wouldn't be drivers like THEM". His daughter came up to me a few minutes later, and said "That's one of the nicest things I've ever heard someone say to my Dad". He was tickled that someone appreciated his involvement.
Although I'd never met Stan, he will be missed by an entire segment of the racing world. If someone ever starts a racecar OWNERS Hall of Fame, Stan Schoff damn well be considered on the first ballot.
P.S. - For a bunch of years, the 23S car was known as the Schoff & McBride car. Who can fill me in about who "McBride" was? One of my never-been-answered questions.
C'mon HaudFan.... If anyone around here knows, you'd be the guy!
I met Mr Shoff and his wife at East Bay one night years ago. What wonderful people. Anyway we got to talking and they told me about the time Mrs. Shoff won the 50/50 (about $5k cash) at Eldora Speedway. She was so worried about being robbed or stopped by the police thinking it was drug money she had Stan drive straight home after the races. Stan rolled his eyes and said yeah about a 4 hour trip...Anyway Stan Shoff was a great car owner and a good person. God speed Stan Shoff.
P.S.- His driver (Frankie Kerr) wasn't too bad either. When Frankie retired Stan retired as well. What a class act.
Hey Frassy... Did you know Barry Camp... I met him down here during February in the late 70's and we hit it off real well, an absoulutely super guy... He had never run asphalt before but did real well at the OSW race (either '77 or '78)... That OSW race was won by Sammy Swindell BTW... He raced for awhile after that, but I lost track of him... just wonder if he's still around...
