  • Auburndale Speedway Racing Preview for 3/17/18 - Sprint Cars Return!!!

SPRINT CARS MAKE THEIR RETURN TO AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY SATURDAY NIGHT - TQ MIDGETS & DAARA ON TAP TOO

Auburndale Speedway will celebrate St. Patrick's Day Saturday night and it will be the fans who'll be the lucky ones as they will get to witness the return of Outlaw-style Sprint Car racing for the first time at the track since 2014.

The BG Products Southern Sprint Car Shootout Series (SSSS) presented by Hoosier Racing Tires, Steele Performance, Sunoco, Southern Race Fuels, Allstar Performance, Dayton-Andrews Dodge and MK Graphics will be in action along with the Florida Midget Racing Association (FMRA) Three-Quarter Midgets, Q Mini Stocks and Scrambler cars. As a special treat, the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association (DAARA) returns with their own classic Sprint Cars, Midgets, Modifieds and Stock Cars. Weather is expected to be very good with mostly clear skies and temperatures in the lower to mid 70s at race time.

Along with the racing, a total of eight bicycles will be given away to the younger children in attendance through the courtesy of long-time Auburndale Speedway race fans David and Martin Brooks. Each youngster will be given a ticket as they enter the grandstand area and eight lucky tickets will be draw by the Sprint Car drivers during the intermission.

Current point leader for the SSSS Sprints is Mickey Kempgens of Brandon who drives the PCS Racing Special. Kempgens holds a seven point advantage over Dover's Johnny Gilbertson and a 21 point edge over Shane Butler who hails from Bushnell. Butler won the Series' Speedweeks event held at New Smyrna Speedway on February 10th. The most recent SSSS race was held on February 17th at 4-17 Southern Speedway and was won by Sport Allen of Pinellas Park driving the Dayton-Andrews Dodge/BG Products #88 owned by former TBARA champion Taylor Andrews. All four will be racing for the checker at Auburndale this week. Unfortunately it does not look like Troy DeCaire, who won the season opener in January at 4-17, will be able to compete because his car has not been repaired from a bad crash last time out. DeCaire is currently the fourth place driver in points while Mike Tharp of North Fort Myers is fifth in the points tally and will be in action Saturday night.

A total of around 20 Sprinters are expected. Along with those mentioned above, others in action will include young lady racer Carli Yent of Tampa, who will be making her first start of the season, defending SSSS champion John Inman of Dover (who will again be piloting the Mac Steele Autocraft #2 while waiting for a new engine for his regular #59X), Tommy Nichols of Plant City, Titusville's Rex "Boneman" Hollinger and veteran driver Scotty Adema of Fort Myers.

Other drivers expected include Travis Bliemeister (Venice), Clayton Donaldson (Mulberry), Bill Pettijohn (Land O' Lakes), Tony Agin (Ft. Myers), Phil Haddad (Seffner), Gary Wiggins (Cape Coral), Blake Rose (Eustis), Ray Bragg (Lutz) and Dylan Reynolds (Leesburg).

The South Florida-based Florida Midget Racing Association TQ Midgets will be led by fan-favorite Jimmy Wilkins III of Fort Pierce who won the club's season opening event at 4-17 Southern Speedway last month. Other drivers expected to compete include veteran shoe Mike Belusar, Rob Kohler, Mike Nelson, Al Seitz, Dalton Baldwin and Scott Robosky.

The Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association is coming off a very successful Winternationals program that was held at Auburndale Speedway a few weeks ago. Around 30-35 classic Sprint Cars, Midgets, Stock Cars and Modifieds will be taking part this Saturday. Long-time Central Florida racer Stan Butler of Bushnell will head up the Sprint Car contingent along with former West Virginian Dave Cash who now calls Palm Coast home. Cash has one of the original first-run Gambler Chassis Sprint Cars from the early 1980s.

The Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Mini Stocks have been a family affair so far this season as defending champion Chris Narramore, Sr. has three feature wins to his credit while the other feature win so far this year was taken by his son Chris, Jr.

Pit gates open at 3 pm with practice slated from 3:45 - 6:15 pm. Grandstand gates open at 5 pm and racing begins at 7 pm with 8-lap heat races for the Southern Sprint Car Series, DAARA cars, FMRA TQ Midgets, Q Mini Stocks, and Scramblers. Intermission will feature an autograph/photo op session on the front straight featuring the cars and drivers of the Southern Sprint Car Shootout Series and the bicycle giveaway.

Feature racing starts out with the headliners for the DAARA machines followed by a pair of 20-lap contests for the Q Mini Stocks and the Scramblers. The FMRA TQ Midgets follow with their 25-lap feature and the evening concludes with the 40-lap special for the Sprint Cars.

Once again, Auburndale Speedway is holding true to their regular admission prices although this is a special event program. Adult admission is $15 with seniors 55+ admitted for $13. Children ages 5-12 are only $5 and all kids 4 and under get in free. The family 4-pack is $32 for two adult admissions and two admissions for kids aged 5-12, a savings of $8 over the regular price. Pit passes are $30 per person and all parking is free.
