Carol... did you forward a flier to Wally?

Tireman... a trivia question for you. Do you know what the "XL 1" stood for? There is a local car that is a tribute to the XL-1 in the Sanford area, owned by John Clark Sr., and sometimes run by his son John Jr. in local Vintage events.

            XL-1 Info

I believe the gentleman who owned the XL-1 and XE-1 (Experimental Edsel, I believe) is Don House. It has been a long time since my "Old Bridge" days. I believe that Don House also owned the car in which Don MacTavish lost his life at Daytona.

I hope that Wally is able to make it to the reunion. I was not able to make this year's event, but am looking forward to the 2009 gathering.

Other drivers of the XL-1 that I remember include; Joe Kelly, Tommie Elliot, and I vaguely remember Lee Roy Yarbrough in the car in a modified race at the Trenton Fairgrounds.

I think that some of us here have a bit of a common background and I look forward to meeting some of you and just talk about some of the local NJ racing of that era.

Carol, you are doing a terrific job lining up guests. Keep up the good work.

Since you brought up The Experimental Lincoln-1. Joe Kelly as you might know real name was David Haupt. Joe meet Don house who lives on Kelly Street hence the name Joe Kelly. The car was owned by Don House but BUILT by Al Gehrum at Custom Auto Body in Avenel N.J.
Drivers in the Original XL-1 where Joe, Nick Daden, Wally, Leroy Yarbrough, Trenton N.J, Sammy Beavers at Langhorne. Later one the Replica XL-1 was driven by Tommy Elliot. I use the name Replica since the only XL-1 that really put the racing world on Notice was this one.

The next generation of the XL-1 was again built by Al then the problem at Daytona with Don's death. Mr House never really got over that. It was not the builders fault but in typical NASCAR fashion they hung it on him. Track gate GAVE the front end was taken off the car and Sam Sommers hit Don, that was how it happened.
Wally sent my dad some pictures from Indy and I will bring it to the reunion.

No kidding, that site cost me, buying a race car, looking into and almost buying one track and still have thoughts about the 2nd track. I was 100% weined off raacing till I found the site now I am in ICRU, Intensive Care Race Unit. I grew up around and with a lot of those drivers and people up home in New Jersey.
