This has been a weird year for me....and I am ready to get back in the groove.

In 2016, I attended the Little 500 in Anderson, IN (excellent), the Classic Weekend in Oswego, NY (also excellent), and the Daytona 500 (close by). So far in 2017, I have only raced 4 times and have not been to seen any big events outside of Florida. Does anyone have suggestions? I prefer open-wheel, but all racing is cool with me.

The Snowball Derby is coming in December, but how about October-November?

Ever been to Williams Grove Rex? This one should be on your bucket list - went there back in 1977 with a whole group of guys from the Homestead area including Don Heckman, Danny Curl and Rob Bean... Steve Smith (Stevie's dad) won the race that year... We also went to Reading the night before... it was quite a trip! Here's the release for this year's National Open:

The 55th annual Williams Grove Speedway Champion Racing Oil National Open for the World of Outlaws Crafstsman Sprint Car Series is just two weeks away with action slated for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, September 28, 29 and 30.

The three-day affair will showcase the best of the Pennsylvania Posse sprint car stars against the World of Outlaws Craftsman Series sprint car series stars in an epic battle culminating with a $50,000 to win, 40-lap finale on Saturday night.

Thursday and Friday will feature main events paying $10,000 to win.

In addition, the Thursday night program will also include the held over Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals feature from July 22.

And what all of this means is that up to $90,000 in winnings could be claimed by one driver should he sweep all four main events contested during the three-day stretch.

Adult general admission on Thursday and Friday is set at $30 with youth ages 13 – 20 admitted for $15 and students 12 and under admitted for free.

Saturday’s adult admission is $35 with youth priced at $20.

Camping gates will open on Tuesday, September 26 at noon. Rates for the week are $40.

Rex, get the 4 day package, it is a great value and you can go back and forth from the pits to the stands any time the track is under red flag conditions. You will see cars from all over the southeast in all of the classes.It has some of the best race track food anywhere in the good ole USA.

Is the World Championship still going on at Charlotte?

Fred, I never hear anything bad about the Snowball Derby. Are you going?

It depends on my son.

If Tom is going we will try and go. His was helping Logan Boyette(sp) the past few years. A lot of my fun is spending a few days with Tom and Adrianne.

The Snowball Derby is great -- if you haven't been, just go. You will love it. Along the same lines, I love the All-American 400 at the Nashville Fairgrounds. Awesome track, lots of history and Nashville lends itself to a fun vacation.

Dixie Shootout we are going for the first time, Went to Watermelon Capitol Speedway for the Super Southern Series. Very cool track.

Give Thompson Speedway a Try !!!

Boneman, if you want to head a little further North and catch some fall foliage along the way you could head to Thompson Speedway (5/8's mile high banked asphalt) in my home state of Connecticut. Left there many, many years ago but the World Series of Stock Cars was big back then and it has only become bigger, Looks like 18 divisions of racing, all top notch, with approx. 375 cars entered so far. Starts on Oct 13 and runs thru Oct 15. Some of the headliners are the NEMA MIdgets, Whelan Modifieds, Super Modifieds , Pro Stock late models plus more. Full divisions in all classes. . Phil from the North may be able to supply more info but the Thompson Speedway site has plenty of detail. I am going to Talladega that weekend otherwise I would head to Thompson once again. Where ever you head have a great tine at the races !!!
