This past Saturday saw warm temperatures, blue skies and a good crowd at Bronson Speedway in quaint little Archer, Florida for Round 2 of the Six Pack Series for Sportsman cars. In an effort to provide entertainment for the large group of fans in attendance, track owner Ann Young decided to run heat races, instead of "boring" time-trials for this installment of the series. Ann proved to be right on the money as Patrick Thomas took down Heat One with a dramatic pass of yours truly coming to the white flag of the qualifier. I can't express how much fun it was finally racing door to door with my good friend and mentor Patrick. Heat Two was won by Matthew Green in his stout new Sportsman with Colton Bramlett and hot shoe Sean Bass in tow. The invert saw Colton Bramlett on the pole, flanked by myself on the outside for the start of the 50 lap event on the high banks of Bronson. The opening laps saw a torrid side-by-side battle between myself and Colton, in good old short track style, with a little door banging to boot. Eventually, I was able to clear young Colton and tried to set sail, knowing full well that Wheelman Series champion Sean Bass and two-time NASCAR All-American Series National Champion Patrick Thomas were chasing me down. A few laps later Sean was on my rear bumper looking to make the pass. Shortly thereafter his awesome Gaerte Engines powered machine motored by me, as I got up on the wheel and tried my darndest to stay on his rear bumper. At that point we had opened up a sizeable lead over Thomas, Green and the rest of the field. Trouble with the lap car of Trace Reed on lap 13 sent Patrick spinning down the front stretch into the turn one grass with considerable damage. After a lengthy yellow to allow Patrick to make repairs, he rejoined the field minus a right front fender. On the restart Sean had no problem disposing of me and set sail, taking young Matthew Green in tow with him. For some reason after the restart my 07 machine was not quite as stout as in the early laps of the event, as I fell back to third. Meanwhile, Patrick was driving the wheels off his yellow 111 machine he affectionately refers to as "Ol' Yeller", in an effort to get back near the front of the field. With about 20 to go Patrick caught my 07, as it continued to get loose and he passed me with relative ease. At that point, Sean had amassed a sizeable lead over Green and the rest of the field and at the checkers it was Bass, Green, Thomas and myself, with Bramlett 5th and Junior Beckner coming home 6th after suffering the misfortune of sustaining a cut tire in warm up laps from contact with another car before the initial green.
