    Green wins Paulie Milum Memorial

    By SCOTT LOCKWOOD

    Desoto Speedway

On a night where Desoto Speedway honored former Sprint Car racer and Bradenton resident Paulie Milum with a 30-lap memorial race presented by his former sponsor in American Drilling, it was one of the state's quickest rising stars that found himself in the winner's circle.

Garrett Green took the lead from Ernie Teed just prior to the caution flying for Wendy Mathis' stalled car on lap 4. Green and Mickey Kempgens paced the field for most of the race, with Kempgens trailing Green right through traffic in a fast-paced race.

Green got trapped behind Troy Thompson's slower car in turn four, which allowed Kempgens to take the lead with just four laps to go. A caution flew just a lap later when Johnny Gilbertson spun directly in front of the leaders.

On the restart Allen tried to charge from third to first as the field entered turn one. Allen's car nearly launched over Kempgens' car and into the air, coming to a rest against the outside wall. Butler and Thompson were also collected while Kempgens resumed after a restart.

Kempgens charged all the way to second on the restart but ran out of time as Green took the checkered flag.

“There were some heart-sinking moments in that race,” Green said. “We're lucky that caution came out because Mickey would have had it for sure. Without lapped traffic, I don't think I could have got him back. It means a lot to win this one for sure.”

Butler, Teed and Gilbertson rounded out the top five.

The Modified Minis held their first of three 50-lap Triple Crown races for the 2017 season. Ray Miller went to the lead early, but Fred Paravicini charged from third to first on lap 3.

Paravicini, Dave Davis, Jeff Firestine and Mike Kerrivan all catch the lapped cars of Jimmy Wood and Marshall Parr. After being boxed in Paravicini led the train through the traffic, but they'd encounter the same situation 10 laps later. Firestine spun as the leaders tried getting by the backmarkers, bringing out the caution at lap 33.

Paravicini pulled away from the rest of the field before Kerrivan moved from fourth to second. Kerrivan got the break he needed when Firestine stopped on the track with a flat tire with five laps to go. He had a chance to get by Paravicini when he got loose coming out of turn four with two laps to go, but Paravicini held on for the win.

“I've taken a lot of seconds so first is a great feeling,” Paravicini said. “I just wanted to hang on for those five laps. The tires heated up, we got real loose and Mike almost got me...but I was able to hang on.”

The Strictly Stock class was also on hand for three different feature events. James Prochaska grabbed the lead at the outset and was joined at the front of the field by Josh Bridges. As the duo ran side-by-side for the lead at the 10-lap mark, Prochaska got into the side of Bridges. Bridges spun out, but continued in the event.

Steve Major charged from deep in the field to challenge Prochaska for the lead and eventually got the top spot with about five laps to go. He would go on to the victory, followed by Bill Osborne and Prochaska. Michael Meeks would win the 10-lap road course race, and Bill Osborne won the flag pole race.

In other action Saturday night, Mike Endee took the lead with four laps to go and went on to win the 20-lap Outlaw Modified feature; and Darrin Ellis took the challenge of starting the 15-lap Pure Stock feature half a lap down and rallied for the win.

Desoto Speedway will host 50-lap features for the Street Stock and Open Wheel Modified divisions. Pure Stocks and Bombers will also be in action, and the Dirt Outlaw 4's will be making their Desoto Speedway debut.
