BIG SHOW ON TAP THIS SUNDAY AT ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD
In what is being billed as the "Fall Brawl," Orlando SpeedWorld will see stock car racing again on track for the first time since May with eight classes in action including the Southern Pro-Am Trucks, Super Stock/Street Stocks, Legend Cars, Outlaw Pro Challenge cars, V-6/V-8 Bombers, 4-cylinder Bombers, Vintage Stocks and Vintage Modifieds.
Race action will begin Sunday afternoon at 1 pm and adult admission to the grandstands will be just $5 per person.
SOUTHERN PRO-AM TRUCK SERIES (SPATS):
The Trucks will duke it out for 30 laps on the three-eighths mile SpeedWorld Oval for $800 to win. Presenting sponsors for the Series are Renegade Racing Fuel and the Alan Jay Automotive Network of Sebring. Special Hard Charger and Hard Luck awards have been posted by Rodney Haddock and his business, All Star Truck Parts of Hilliard.
Haddock himself will be in action with his Pro Truck and will face a host of challengers including current SPATS point leader Cole Partelo of Largo whole leads the standings by a slim six point margin over lady driver Taylor Hosford of Madison who will also be in the field. Other expected entrants include red-hot Cody Martel of Arcadia who has posted recent victories at both DeSoto and Auburndale Speedways, veteran Randy Leonard of Lake Placid, third-generation racer Big Donnie Burkhalter of Groveland, Hobe Sound's Taylor Moxley, Jason Lester of Palmetto, Hudson's Paulie Grynewicz III, Billy Carlbert, Jr. of Palmetto and local driver Raymond Dormer III of nearby Chuluota.
Other possible entrants include the winner of the event here in May, Becca Monopoli of Lakeland, Venice hot shoe Dean Butrum, Derek Pugh of Crystal River, Lakeland drivers Chase Lovelady and Tyler Davis along with several more.
The Pro Trucks also have a big event on Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway and the Southern Pro-Am Truck series has posted a $100 bonus to any driver who can win at Auburndale Saturday evening then come on to also take the victory at Orlando Sunday.
SUPER STOCKS/STREET STOCKS:
This race will be for 30 laps and feature "open competition" that will allow drivers from several area tracks to compete against each other for a nice purse of at least $1700. Presenting sponsors are Butch Herdegen/Manheim Orlando Auto Auction, DWG Enterprises Floor Covering of Melbourne (David Gould), Space Coast Portable Welding of Melbourne (John Hodge) and Rex Engineering of Titusville (Rex Hollinger).
Gould and Hodge will have their Super Stock cars in the field. Herdegen, who has moved up to the Sportsman class this year, still has a pair of Super Stocks at his disposal and hopes to be in the field if he can return from a business trip in time to race. If not, his crew chief Mike Trocki (who is no stranger to victory lane at SpeedWorld over the years) may just jump behind the wheel. Local youngster Jeff Cuddy of nearby Christmas hopes to be in the field with his "XL" car that has been dominating competition at New Smyrna Speedway recently.
Richard Fiore, Jr. and his teammate Kevin Ledford will be up from the Palm Beach area while Auburndale Speedway regulars Aaron Holmes and Carl Thompson, Jr. will make their first appearances at the Orlando track and hope to bring a few "friends" with them. At least 20 Super Stock/Street Stock cars are expected to take part.
LEGEND CARS:
The Legends will be in action at SpeedWorld for the first time in nearly two years thanks to four sponsors out of the Brevard County area who are making it possible for the class to be a part of the event. They are Custom Built Contracting, Inc. of Titusville, Loyd Contracting, Inc. of Titusville, Elite Restoration Group of Cocoa and Showers & Closets, LLC of Cocoa.
Former Orlando SpeedWorld Legend Car champion Donovan Ponder of Orlando has filed an entry as has current Auburndale Speedway point leader Seth Adams of Lakeland. Zephyrhills driver Devin McLeod will be in the field driving one of four cars entered by Bob "Wild Willie" Wilson of Beverly Hills. Wilson will be behind the wheel of one of his cars as will Dave "Too Tall" Gleason of Orlando and John Inman of Tampa.
Cocoa's Dave Fusco, who did tons of work in lining up the sponsors for this race, is also entered as is Modified racing standout L. J. Grimm of Seffner who will race a team car to Seth Adams. Other early entries include Alan Hiefnar of Merrit Island, Mark Bibeau of St. Cloud and Davie's Joey Langis. Other possible entries will be the brother act of Mike and Mitch Verhaagh of Ft. Myers, Darin Coker of West Palm Beach, Tim Harris of Lakeland, Cale Nolen of Polk City and several more.
OUTLAW PRO CHALLENGE CARS:
This series, based out of Salt Springs, put on a great race here in May and will return with another sharp-looking group of 3/4-scale machines that feature both car and truck bodies. Presenting sponsors for their race include Bass Champions Restaurant, Allen Curry Plumbing, LPI Concrete and ATV Off-Road Adventure Tours.
Daniel Miller of Tavares took the win in the May race held here and will be a favorite to take another victory. He'll have plenty of contenders to deal with including the father-son tandem of J. L. and Jarrett Snowden, Sene Capps, Randy Glick, Steve Greenwell, C. J. Lockamy and Pete Briggs. Outlaw Pro Challenge veteran Paul White, who has been racing Late Models over the past year, is going to dust off his Pro Challenge machine and see if he still "has what it takes" to find the checkered flag.
V-6/V-8 BOMBERS - FOUR CYLINDER BOMBERS:
The Bombers will be divided into two classes for Sunday's action and it looks like there will be a plethora of entries going for what is now just over $1,000 in purse money that has been growing daily. The Bomber classes have picked up a bunch of sponsors including Zachary Curtis Racing of Palm Bay, James Skinner Racing/Clean Cut Tree Service of Melbourne, Charles King Racing/Southeast Waterproofing and Coatings of Geneva, Jamie, Travis and Cheyenne Sullivan Racing/Sullivan Moving Systems of Orlando, Ralph Foss/All Auto Salvage of Titusville, Old School Racing/Matheny Racing of Orlando and Joe Hamilton/Straightline Fence of Orlando.
Drivers competing include the "Racing Sullivan's," Jamie, Cheyenne and Travis, Megan Matheny, Zachary "Mr. Saturn" Curtis, James Skinner, Charles King, Sr., Reid Christiensen, Billy Barrington, Joe Rock, Aaron Overman, Keith Krause, Dan Webb and a bevy of other competitors.
VINTAGE STOCKS/MODIFIEDS:
You just never know what to expect when these guys are scheduled to run as there are a large number of vintage/classic race machines all over Central Florida. Needless to say there will be a number of interesting cars, mostly replicas but some original.
Ron Hess will have his '34 Chevy at the track while Tobi Smith and Corey Lane should be in attendance with their late '70s-early '80s vintage NASCAR Tour Modifieds. Smith also has his Bob Judkins #2X tribute car while Larry Larivee will bring his gorgeous #711 machine that is a tribute to his favorite driver Bob Polverari. Expect Billy Belflower to have his great-looking '55 Checy Late Model in the field along with Dave Jarrett's vintage Modified with either son Kelly or grandson Matt behind the wheel. Those are just a few of a big field of "oldies but goodies" that are expected.
Pit gates will open Sunday morning at 9 am with practice for all divisions beginning at 10:30 am or possibly earlier if there is a large field of cars. Grandstand gates will open around 11 am with racing starting at 1 pm. Grandstand admission is only FIVE DOLLARS and all kids 11 and under get in free. Pit passes are $25.
In order to create some more excitement for the fans (and the drivers too), we will not run single-car/truck qualifying for the SPATS Trucks and the Super Stocks/Street Stocks. Instead, drivers will qualify for their respective 30-lap features through a series of "Qualifying Dashes." Here's how it works: Using an arbitrary number of, say, 16 cars/trucks in the field (we hope there will be more), the field will be divided into four, four-car "dashes" set by blind draw as the drivers sign in. The winners of each "dash" will then draw for starting positions 1-4 in the feature. The second place finishers in each "dash" will then draw for positions 5-8 and so on until the feature field is set. This will make for a bigger show for the fans as the drivers will race their way into the field. All other classes will run regular heat races and features.
Old School Racing is also putting together 50 "goodie" bags that will be given away to the first 50 kids entering the grandstands plus there will be door prizes for the fans and much more. Also, Sullivan Racing will be giving away 8"x5" "9/11/01 Never Forgotten" stickers to all who want to show their support this Sunday. You can look for the Sullivan Moving Systems trailer in the pits and we will try and bring some of the stickers to the grandstand side as well.
A special practice session is now scheduled for Saturday 9/10 from 9 am to 3 pm ahead of a special Drifting event to be held at the track that night. Pit admission for practice is $10 per person.
