  • New world record set!

The link below is a video of my Dad's Outlaw Late Model breaking the world record last night back home in Michigan at Kalamazoo Speedway. Andy Bozell is the driver & has been the driver ever since they started doing this I think it's been close to 10 years. Andy & my dad had the record @ 10.02 on the 3/8 mile asphalt oval for a long time and two years ago while attempting to break it again and dip into the 9 second bracket, Andy had a left rear tire go down sending the car hard into the wall and pretty much destroying the car. Only concern we had was that Andy was unharmed and aside of being very sore for a while, he was ok. Last year they chose to take a different car to the show and it was not even close but the record got beat by another team as they went 9.93. Once the record was beat both my dad and Andy decided to rebuild the original car and go after regaining the record. Andy felt the year the tire went down that he was going to get into the 9 second bracket and so when they went out on old tires for hot laps last night he was already flirting with the record. As you will now see on the video from last night when they bolted on the new tires, not only did they get into the 9 second bracket, not only did they break the record set last year.......they SMASHED IT! Andy also stated afterwards that there was......more left! WOW!

Trust me when I tell you I have been there many times to be a part of and see this for myself and nothing compares to seeing it live as it is truly almost unreal to even see. Reminds you of a winged slot car glued to the sutface. Enjoy the video everyone as this is what true Outlaw Late Model racing used to be like and is. Congrats to both my Dad and Andy as well as everyone else who helped with this huge effort to take back the title of the World Record Holder.

I LOVE that track...I've won a number of races there back in the day. And by "day" I mean the 1800's! Hard to imagine a car going 9-anything...REALLY impressive!!!

It is cool to see how excited the fans were for this. This was a well-hyped, annual version of single car qualifying, but the clever people at Kalamazoo turned it into a stand-alone event.

From the racer perspective, I give those teams a pat on the back for setting a difficult goal, and building a better mouse trap to get there. Nice!

Love the old school innovation with the wings, side panels and bodies.......I wish the modified's attempt with that at NSS would have stuck......The FL Mods need a boost......something like this would bring a ton of excitement for the fans......

Adding some "SpeedWeeks" Excitement: What would it take?

                  Asking a *serious* question here.

As a *track owner/promoter*, what would it take to get some "Yankee" stuff down south during Speedweeks? I don't mean *just* during "Daytona week", but, throughout the month of February? You have *thousands* of race fans down there for the "big shows" at the "big track", but it seems like the *luster* of the World Series at New Smyrna has vanished.

How 'bout bringing down some Midwest Supermodified Association (MSA) cars for about three nights somewheres, or split nights at a few different tracks (two nights here, night off, two nights there, night off, two nights somewhere else)? How 'bout some Main Event Racing Series outlaw wedge Super Late Models for about four nights somewheres (DeSoto, St. Pete, Inverness, Orlando, New Smyrna)? How 'bout some non-wing Buckeye Super Sprints on pavement? Maybe a couple of USAC Midget/Sprint Car/Silver Crown?

I know, I know: the almighty *dollar*. But, if you've been in the business long enough, you know ya gotta *spend* money to make MONEY.

Try *any of the above*...if even for just ONE year. See if it works.

Todd, thx for sharing & congratulations to the whole team.

Agreed, am guessing the driver tapped the brakes to "set" the car for the turns, and that was it.

The feel of the vid reminded me of racing in the sixties--Petty at daytona in '68, or maybe the super modifieds at volusia when it was paved--simply thrilling as you know that the whole deal is right on the edge.

Well as of now my dad and Andy were contacted about going after some additional records next year at some different tracks. Berlin, Anderson and some others. As for not lifting he pretty much did not and he did may have scuffed the brake pedal but he has already got all of us going as he thinks there is another quarter second still out there.....LOL. Not for this guy but will once again be fun to watch.

I think it would be awesome to have some sort of show down here like that but I'm not sure there are to many if any super outlaw late models around. If any of the track owners were seriously interested in putting something together message me and I will help you out any way I can. I will tell you one thing.....the fans LOVE IT! It would be awesome for my dad to bring the car down here and have Andy wheel it at tracks down here but the expense would make it kind of impossible to do unless someone put up some good money.

None of the Florida short tracks have been interested in bringing the Northern series down here for the last 10 years or so. USA International brought the USAC open wheel cars down with the help of Tony Stewart. There has to be a ton of retirees in Central Florida who are big fans of the northern series, and would pay to see them race.
My money is on the Ray family and the NEW Citrus County Speedway to bring in some interesting racing to the month of February. I wouldn't be surprised if they've already got things in the works.
