Had to post this great photo from the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona... Ferrari vs. Ford on the high banks... The North American Race Team #26 Ferrari 412P was driven by Pedro Rodriguez and Jean Guichet while the #1 Ford Mk II was driven by Bruce McLaren and Luicien Bianchi... These cars are still exotic-looking today, some 49 years after they were raced... The Ferrari finished third behind two "factory" Ferraris giving the brand a 1-2-3 sweep that year... The Ford had to pit to change a transmission and finished 7th...
Of the four drivers, only Guichet survived to finish his racing career... Bianchi died while practicing for the 1969 24 Hours of LeMans... McLaren died testing a Can-Am car in 1970... Rodriguez died while driving a Ferrari 512M in a race at Nuremberg, Germany in 1971...
Guichet is now 89 years old but regrets one thing in life... He previously owned one of only thirty-six Ferrari 250 GTO Ferrarissima cars ever produced, originally created by Enzo Ferrari in 1962. The price he got for the car when he sold it in 1967 was $4500... the car sold at auction recently for over 15 million dollars!!!! Bet he wished he held on to that one!
