  • Another Trip Down Memory Lane

I'm sure most of you remember the old NASCAR Grand Touring/Grand American Series that ran from 1968-1971... My friend Dargan Watts recently found some old negatives of photos he shot of a GT race at Columbia (SC) Speedway on June 26, 1969... Look at how absolutely stock these cars appeared... The Series was a stepping stone for a few drivers to move up toward Winston Cup but really became more known as a "retread" Series with drivers like Tiny Lund, Jim Paschal, T. C. Hunt and Buck Baker using it to extend their careers... These "name" drivers also helped to keep the Series' head above water for a few years of pretty good racing and they filled the stands wherever they went... This particular race was won by Jim Paschal who was driving the only AMC in the field...

    1) Winner Jim Paschal
    2) Tiny Lund
    3) Buck Baker
    4) T.C Hunt
    5) Charlie Blanton

This was a series Nascar should have learned from but obviously didn't. The truck series should have the same star power that the ga series did.It would only be a good thing to have a series where the older vets can compete at the level they once did.Everywhere the hunt is on for youth but the older stars can still bring butts to the seat which is something the truck series desperately needs.
