  • From the Booth: NSS Week 10 Recap

What a fantastic day to be at the races! The summer sun was shining and the pits were jammed packed with race cars! It was a big day for the Bomber drivers as they were racing 50 laps for a big 700 dollar pay day. Some 25 bomber cars made their way into New Smyrna Speedway trying to capture the big prize put up by Old School Racing, Skinner's Clean Cut Tree Service and Charles King Southeast Waterproofing and Construction! The Sportsman, Super Late Models and Super Stocks all had great car counts as well and it made for an incredible night of racing from start to finish!

11 Super Late Models took the green flag with Rich Clouser on the pole, but it was Jeff Scofield who established the early lead. Early in the race David Rogers had issues while running second and slowed in turn 1 and just missed getting nail by Brad may in the 9. May had a bit of damage to the right front but it could have been much, much worse. Rogers night would get even worse as he spun in turn 1 to bring out the 2nd yellow near the half way point of the event. On the restart Jeff Scofield and TJ Duke sailed off into turn 1 and Scofield would jump out to the lead but Brad May made a big move on the outside to grab the 2nd spot after starting shotgun on the field. Late in the race an incident involving Dalton Smith and Tim Adams would bring out the 3rd yellow and set up a battle between Scofield and May. on the restart Scofield was able to hold the lead but contact between TJ Duke and Jeff Choquette sent Duke hard into the wall and things got a bit rowdy in the pits. Duke was not happy with Choquette's team and track management had to get involved to keep things from getting out of hand. Once the action in the pits settled Jeff Scofield was able to hold off a hard charging Brad May to pick up his first win of the season!

A stout field of 20 American Auto Sportsman took to the track for their 25 lap main event with Andy Nicholls starting on the pole. Nicholls looked strong early on leading a good portion of the early laps. Earl Beckner and Nicholls were battling for the top spot when George Alexander, DJ Farr and Colton Bramlett crash in turns 3 and 4. On the restart Earl Beckner experienced issues with his new car and dropped like a rock through the pack giving Nicholls a nice lead. Kody Jett would eventually chase down and pass Nicholls late in the race as the handling started to go away on the 66 machine. With just a handful of laps remaining Bruce Bennett and Shyanne Mathers caught Jett and battled hard for the lead. Bruce Bennett took the lead coming to the white flag and was able to pull away and take the checkered flag and it looked like Bennett had claimed his first victory of the season. However he would not make it through the room of doom after tech officials found that Bennett's car had soaked tires and he was disqualified. This gave the win to Kody Jett, along with the 300 dollar bonus from American Auto, for picking up his first win of the season!

The Main event of the night was the Old School Racing Bomber 50. All 23 of the cars that were able to start the feature we brought to the front stretch for driver intros and a group picture before the start of the race. James Skinner and Joe Hamilton started the race on the front row and Hamilton jumped out to a big lead early. Somehow the field made it threw turns 1 and two without incident. But on lap two 4 or 5 cars crashed in turn 1. The wreck involved Aaron Overman, Keith Krause, Brad Blanton and Megan Matheny who got the worst of it. Luckily most of those involved were able to continue. Shortly after the restart former champion James Barron took over the race lead for a few laps before getting knocked out of the way by Greg Bruce in the 8. This allowed Ron McCreary to take the lead. Ron started all the way in the back of the back in his big ole pink Buick and he would hold of challenges from both Zach Curtis and Greg Bruce. McCreary held the lead through a long green flag run until a late caution for a spin by Michael Scannell bunched the field up with just a handful of laps to go. On the restart Zach Curtis was able to wreslte the lead from McCreary and Greg Bruce made it by for 2nd. The rest of the race would run clean and green and no one could catch Zach Curtis who took home a nice $700 payday! Greg Bruce and Ron McCreary (2nd and 3rd respectfully) were DQed in tech so that moved Billy Barrington to 2nd and Matt Thornton to 3rd! Overall it was a great turnout and a relatively clean 50 laps of racing. Hopefully the Bomber get another chance to be the center of attention later on this season as their support for this race was incredible. A big thanks goes out to Jeff Matheny and Old School Racing (and Skinner's Clean Cut Tree Service and Charles King Southeast Waterproofing and Construction) for making this possible for the "little guys"!

The final event of the evening was the 25 lap contest for the always exciting super stock class. John Hodge would start the race on the pole but the story of the night was watching Preston Hunt bulldoze the field. On lap 1 Hunt made contact with Garrett Hill on the backstretch sending him into the wall. Hunt would work his way back through traffic after pitting under the 1st yellow and again would make contact with Garrett Hill while battling for 2nd Hill went sideways before Jeff Cuddy Hit him in the door and straightened him back out. Hunt then went on to challenge John Hodge for the lead only to spin him out instead of trying to pass him. Hodge was non to happy with this outcome and he let Hunt know under caution of his displeasure by leaving a nice donut on the door of the 6 machine. Shortly after the restart Preston Hunt lost a tire, after all the contact with the other drivers and fell out of the race. Some would call it over aggressive driving and some will call it good hard racing but it did not pay off for Hunt in the end. This left Jeff Cuddy all alone out front and Cuddy was able to hold off point leader Bobby Holley for his 3rd win in a row!

    Super Stock Top 5:
    1. #XL Jeff Cuddy
    2. #56 Bobby Holley
    3. #16 David Gould
    4. #17 John Hodge
    5. #63 Dale Howard

Overall it was the best turn out of the season for most of the divisions and it was a very exciting night of action! The Bombers came out in huge numbers for their big race and a nice field of super late models were on hand in preparation for the Clyde Hart Memorial 100 on Thursday, June 30th. The Clyde Hart Memorial 100 is race number 2 for the Bright House Challenge series and there should be a nice field of cars on hand. The American Auto Sportsman, Modifieds and Bombers will all be in action as well. This is sure to be a great way to kick of your 4th of July weekend!

"Some would call it over aggressive driving (Hunt) and some will call it good hard racing but it did not pay off for Hunt in the end."

Anyone that saw the race SHOULD call it over aggressive...he hit everything but the lottery.

        Lol

Lol and I was one they blamed last year for the way they drove and wrecked everyone. I'm not even racing there this year and they still run threw everyone instead of passing them. Was unbelievable to wreck cars and not get penalized once. Thank you Ryan29 for posting and writing what actually happened.
