The Neon Class(es):
Yes, racefans, if you like front wheel drive Neons, Showtime is the place to be. They have kids classes, sometimes old timer classes, there are strictly stock Neons and mildly modified Neons.
True they have some of the best Neon racing around, and true, there are some Hondas and the occasional Saturn, but mostly Neons.
Although it seems like they have about three hundred of them running somewhere between 64 and 89 races, surely there aren't more than 40 or 50 of them, and surely they don't have more than 6 or 8 races.
And the sound! "Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah-baaaaaaawl". Over and over. Like angry wasps swarming around a corpse.
Now before I get off the Neon kick, it needs to be mentioned that Robert Yoho Jr. was driving a Neon, managed to spin someone out, and was in fact promptly ordered to the pits by Robert Yoho Sr. Good Stuff.
Other than that, I have no idea who won. Seriously, no disrespect intended to the Neon racers, it is just way, way too much of a pretty fair thing, imo.
The Figure Eights:
Exciting. The guys are all pretty good and know how to play the crossing relatively safely while still keeping you on the edge of your seat.
Shawn Senokossoff was the class of the field in his lexan bodied car. Thaaaaaats right, you can see the cage.
Honorable mention goes out to Shane Grigsby who has the worlds widest '77 Chevelle street stock who held off the figure eight aces for quite a while.
The Trucks:
Cody McDuffie had the truck of the night. It was just plain stout coming off the corners and blasting down the straights. Becca Monopoli put up a good fight, and gave it all she had--including a little paint from time to time, but could do nothing with Cody.
The Late Models:
A good race briefly interrupted by rain. Prior to the shower, Becca appeared to be the class of the field, but after the rain started to fall, not so much. In fact, the cars in the rear of the field appeared to be stronger in general after the shower. Am guessing softer setups with more side bite, but...that's a guess.
After the rain delay Scott Grossenbacher in the 09 again had the car to beat--and no one did. Honorable mention to Jamie King in the 24, who came through the field late to finish second and pretty much bounced off every wall and everybody to get there.
Doug Miller was there and, like Becca, looked pretty good before the rain. He later dropped out of the event.
The Stories:
Becca Monopoli--What a joy it is to watch her race. She is just plain good. Aggressive without being either goofy or dirty. If only Danica could drive like Becca--or better yet, if Becca could wheel Danica's car... Maybe someday...
The Rain--Yes, there was a brief shower. Yoho knew about it, and at about 8:30 said on the mic he had about two hours before the rain and was going to run the show off without interruption or intermission. And to his credit, he did.
BUT, that still meant the endless buzzing buzzbombs, and Yoho was off about 30 minutes. For the entire hour and a half, the the crowd could see the rain coming. At one point Robert said to the tower (while facing the crowd) "What are we waiting on?" I replied "The Late Models!!", while a nice grandmotherly type in front of me also yelled "The Rain!!".
He did get the show in, but 2/3 or better of the crowd left when the rains started falling--without seeing the Late Models finish, including Grandma. Do we think they are happy campers?
Again, a suggestion, promoters: If it looks like rain, run the features in reverse order--the best stuff first. That is by and large what the people came to see, the money from both gates is in hand, and the people that like the lower classes--particularly the Neons--will surely stick around if it does not rain out.
And for heaven's sake, a Neon heat and a Neon feature would be great. Any more than that, run 'em at the end of the night--rain or shine.
The Wrap Up:
Let me be clear, a decent night at Showtime--which it was--is damn near better than a great night anywhere else in the world!
