  • Yet Another Legend Has Left Us - Dutch Hoag

BATH, NY — Donald C. “Dutch” Hoag, 89, of Spaulding Drive, Bath, N.Y. died Wednesday (May 11, 2016) peacefully at home after a brief illness.
He was born in Naples, N.Y. on Nov. 2, 1926, to Carl and Olive Hoag. Dutch was a racing legend through the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. He won the Langhorne National Open a record of five times. He was the only driver to win it both on dirt (1956, 1960 and 1963) and asphalt (1967 and 1968).
Although racing was a passion, he loved his family even more. Dutch was predeceased of his wife of 60 years, Doris, in February of 2007.
Dutch is survived by his daughter, Donna (Lee Osborne) Johnston of Penn Yan; his son, Dean (Christine) Hoag of Dundee; his brother, Kenneth (Myrna) Hoag of Georgia; his sister-in-law, Rosemary (Clay) Ovenshire; four grandchildren, Alex (Nicole) Hoag of Bath, Erica (Murray) Streicher of Bath, Denee (John) Stirpe of Victor, N.Y. and Kristie (Scott) McNally of Bath; seven great-grandchildren, Noah, Michael, Brady, Madison, Claire, Tanner, and Zachary. He was also predeceased by his three brothers, Robert, Milton, and Bill Hoag; as well as son-in-law, Michael Johnston.
Friends may call on Friday, May 13 from 5-8 p.m., at Fagan’s Funeral Home in Bath. A funeral service will be held on (Saturday, May 14 at 1 p.m.) at the Kanona United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Valley View Cemetery.
The family also invites you to attend a dinner in celebration of Dutch’s life and enjoy one last meal “on Dutch.” (Saturday, May 14, 2016, 3 p.m., at the Bath VFW). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Dutch’s name may be made to: Motor Racing Outreach (MRO), Smith Tower, Suite 405, 5555 Concord Parkway S., Concord, N.C., 28027

Dutch has been in my entire racing life. He was in the first race I ever saw, and was already THE Legend in the area. He was feared as a racer, but loved as a person. I don't ever recall someone being pissed at Dutch.
In more recent times, he has attended several Modified Reunions, including the very first. Somewhere I have a picture of Dutch and my Mom from that day.

I once interviewed Gene Bergin, a Hall of Fame racer himself, and asked if he ever looked up to as a racer. He said "Yep... and he's standing right there.... Dutch Hoag"
