  • From the Booth: NSS Week 3 Recap

For the first time this year Mother Nature cooperated on consecutive Saturday Nights! Week number 3 of the Whelen All American Series welcomed the American Auto Sportsman back to the track for a big 50 lapper. The Modifieds and Mod Minis all hit the track for the first time this season. And as always the Rodizio Grill Bomber were also in action!

The Modifeds took to the track for the first time since Speedweeks and thrilled the crowd with another classic Jerry Symons vs. Tank Tucker slugfest. Symons seemed to have the car to beat after a rough Speedweeks, but as always Tucker was right there in his tire tracks. Tucker tried time after time to get a run on Symons, but was unable to get enough momentum to get around him. Late in the race as the two veterans battled for the lead, both drivers got out of shape in turn 4 and Tucker couldn't hang on and he spun out to bring out the events only caution. The 98 of Matt Jarrett apparently put down some fluid and caused things to get wild up front. The spin put tucker in the back with only a handful of laps left and he was never able to get back up to battle Symons for the win and would have to settle for third. Jerry Symons tossed the monkey off his back and took home his first win of the year over Alan Bruns and Jerry Symons.

    Modifed Top 5:
    1. 66 Jerry Symons
    2. 4B Alan Bruns
    3. 15 Tank Tucker
    4. 96 Matt Wheeler
    5. 9 Art Kunzeman

Up next was the 50 lap main event for the American Auto Sportsman division. over 15 drivers were on hand for a shot at the $300 bonus if they could be defending champ Patrick Thomas, that is. Colin Allman was quickest in qualifying, but drew an 8 for the invert. This set up some intense racing early on as the faster cars tried to make their way to the front. Sandy Lee started the race from the pole and led a few laps early. Colin Allman impressively used the outside lane to make his way to the front of the pack as Sandy lee's car began to fade a bit. As the race reached its half way point Allman had built a nice lead over the 111 car of Patrick Thomas. This evaporated after the events first yellow for a spin on the track. On the restart things got interesting, as Michael Held spun his 55 machine and collected Ron Gustafson's number 38, tearing the whole right side off the Gustafson machine. As this was happening Patrick Thomas was side by side will Allman for the lead. The caution was thrown and this thwarted Thoma's attempt to take the lead. On the ensuing restart Allman jumped out to a big lead but Thomas methodically chased him down and was able to get around him with just a handful of laps remaining. Allman's car went away on him and he faded late in the run and wasn't able to challenge for the win. When all was Said and Done Patrick Thomas claimed his second victory of the year ahead of Earl Beckner and Derrick Wood.

    American Auto Sportsman Top 5:
    1. 111 Patrick Thomas
    2. 71 Earl Beckner
    3. 1 Derrick Wood
    4. 86 Richard Goodrich
    5. 10 Sandy Lee

The Mod Minis would hit the track next for the first time since late in the 2015 season. This race contained some of the best racing of the night as Mr Mini Stock, Ted Vulpius battled door to door with Robbie Yoakam for well over 10 laps. The two showed they were fast during the heat race where Yoakam edged Vulpius by a fender to claim the win. Vulpius and Yoakam were the class of the field in the main as well. it looked like Ted Vulpius might be able to continue his winning ways early on, but once Yoaham was able to get clear of Vulpius he never looked back. Robbie Yoaham in the 1X machine would end up in victory lane over Ted Vulpius (which was no easy feat in 2015) after 25 laps of great, clean racing, to claim his first win of the season.

    Mod Mini Top 5:
    1. 1X Robbie Yoakam
    2. 71 Ted Vulpius
    3. 8 James Dixson
    4.1 David Russel
    5. 35 Bobby Dooley

The Rodizio Grill Bombers would close out the evening's card with their 20 lap main event. Richard Tyner in the black and blue 180 machine established himself as the man to beat early. He jumped out to a nice lead but he had to drive smart because new comer, Joe Hamilton in the number 10 car was not far behind. The Bombers put on yet another clean race as the event race yellow free. Richard Tyner had the best car and did not make any mistakes and was able to hold on claim his first checkered flag of the season. over Hamilton and defending champion Aaron Overman. On top of the race winnings, Tyner won a dinner for two at the Rodizio Grill! This might be even better than the win itself!

    Rodizio Grill Bomber Top 5:
    1. 180 Richard Tyner
    2. 10 Joe Hamilton
    3. 03 Aaron Overman
    4. 07 Mike Scannell
    5. 21X Mac McDonald
