  • From The Booth: NSS week 2 Recap

After yet another knockout punch from Mother Nature last week, we were given a beautiful evening for racing! Week number two of the Whelen All American Series saw the Pro Late Models, Rodizio Grill Bombers and the Speedway Flooring Super Stocks all in action!

First up were the Pro Late Models, who we haven't seen on track since the World Series in February. A stout field of 15 cars would line up to take the green flag! Caesar Bacarella in the Skinner Racing number 33 would take the early lead. The race was halted by a number of cautions early, including a big pileup in turn one and two when Larry Blount spun in front of the field and collected the 41 of Jeff White, the 28 of Barry Brooks and a couple others. Jeff White sustained the most damage in the wreck but his crew removed the damaged hood and nose of the car and he was able to pull off an impressive 7th place finish with a car that looked more like a modified than a late model. Larry Blount's tough night would continue as he spun again in turn one trying make his way back through traffic and had to settle for a disappointing 11th place finish. Once the field stopped wrecking Brad May, in his newly rebuilt car (after a hard crash during Gov. Cup weekend), would wrestle the lead away from Caesar Bacarella and hold on and claim the victory for the Bobby Sears race team! Bacarella came home in 2nd and Matt Montineri wound up an impressive 3rd!

    Pro Late Model Top 5:
    1 #9 Brad May
    2 #33 Caesar Bacarella
    3 #10 Matt Montineri
    4 #57 Michael Lira
    5 #17 Blaise Hetznecker

After intermission, it was time for the Speedway Flooring Super Stock 50 lapper. Preston Hunt in the Sunbelt Rentals #6 machine set fast time earlier in qualifying but drew the 3 pill for the invert putting Dale Howard on the pole. Howard would lead early in the event but it quickly became the Preston Hunt and Jeff Cuddy show up front. Cuddy looked extremely fast in the XL Billy Cuddy Painting Machine early on opening up a big lead before a spin by Dale Howard's 63 car brought out the yellow. On the restart Cuddy and Hunt made contact almost wrecking on the front straight away. Luckily both drivers regained control and continued to dominate until the exhaust manifold broke on Cuddy's car. Cuddy's ride was never the same after this and the handling went away as Preston Hunt drove off unchallenged and picked up his first victory of 2016. Bobby Holley, winner of the last super stock race, came home an impressive 2nd after breaking a rear axle in practice and crashing his car. and Dale Howard recovered from his spin early in the race to come home in the 3rd spot.

    Super Stock Top 5:
    1 #6 Preston Hunt
    2 #56 Bobby Holley
    3 #63 Dale Howard
    4 #13 Rusty Perdue
    5 #17 John Hodge

The final event of the evening was the Rodizio Grill Bombers 20 lap contest. Eddie Moran would start the race on the pole, but Greg Bruce made things interesting on the first lap. His car was a rocket ship down the back stretch and was challenging for the lead in turn 3 until he lost control and spun in turn 4. He was able to get righted and the yellow flag did not fly. This left Bruce way behind the field as Moran and Aaron Overman battled for the lead up front. As the laps ticked off Greg Bruce had the fastest car on the track as he tried to make up ground from his spin. Bruce would get a break when Ralph Jones spun his number 11 machine in turn 1 bringing out the events only yellow. On the restart Greg Bruce quickly shot to the front of the pack and took command of the race. No one could touch Bruce and the only thing that would keep him out of victory lane would be the handling on his car. His car looked extremely unstable in turns 3 and 4 and he almost spun out a couple of times. Bruce was ultimately able to hang on a claim his first win of the season, despite his first lap mishap! Defending champion Aaron Overman would come home in 2nd and Eddie Moran took the checkered flag in 3rd.

    Bomber top 5:
    1 #8 Greg Bruce
    2 #03 Aaron Overman
    3 #1 Eddie Moran
    4 #21x Mac MacDonald
    5 #07 Michael Scannell

Next week the American Auto Sportsman cars return with a big 50 lapper! It will be a can't miss event as American Auto has put up an extra $300 bucks if someone is able to pick up their first win of the year. This means everyone will be gunning for defending track champion Patrick Thomas, who won a few weeks ago. Also in action will be the Modified and Mod Minis for the first time this year. Along with the wild and wacky Bombers.
