  • Nice Gesture by Carl Edwards...

Edwards Gives MIS Trophy To Wheelchair-Bound Teen
A wheelchair-bound Michigan teen got a special gift from one of his heroes over the weekend. Pat and Teresa Byrnes took their son Cody to the Michigan International Speedway so he could see his favorite driver, #99-Carl Edwards, race. "Carl happened to be walking by and we gave him a thumbs up and Cody gave him a thumbs up and he saw his flag waiving on the back of Cody's chair. And so he stopped, turned around and came back and he came over and he signed his wheelchair and he signed his shirt," said Teresa Byrnes. The Byrnes were already excited that Cody got to meet his hero, but they weren't prepared for what Carl Edwards told Cody next. "He looked at him and he said, 'Hey buddy, I'll tell you, if I win that trophy today, now that's if I win, I'll give you that trophy'," Teresa recalled. The Byrnes say they began to realize Edwards could win the race when he moved from the 27th spot to first place in about 60 laps. Pat Byrnes says that's the most nervous he's ever been during a race. Edwards did win that race. Carl Edwards signed the trophy for Cody with the initials NGU, which means never give up. "Cody, everyday he wakes up and sees it. It's like he's realizing it's really his and he'll get excited and squeal, for someone to work so hard to get that trophy and then to say, 'Here, you can have it'. That is the kindest gesture anybody has ever done," said Teresa.

That is really cool. I remember at Nss kids used to line up at the fence and some of the drivers would give their trophys to the kids. A friend of mines son will forever be a Tank Tucker fan because of that. Too bad that was ruined. I always gave away my trophys whenever I got one. Most 4th and 5th place strictly stock trophys mean far more to the kids then they will ever mean to a driver.

      Class act for sure.

Many of these guys have a charity for tax purposes, but not many hand out their trophies to the underprivledged. From another story I read, he does this with ALL of his trophies.

Carl isn't usually real flashy (although I have seen some great moves), but he reminds me of David Pearson.... hangs around all day, lets you wear yourself out, and then drives right past all of them.

Carl gave Bobby Hamilton Jr the trophy from Nashville last year after the Busch race there.

Might be the last trophy Hamilton Jr. ever gets his hands on!

I'm sure it was in tribute to Bobby Sr. He also seemed to be a classy guy. Too bad his kid didn't learn that from his father. Some of these "silver spoon" kids seem to be complete asses. See Steven Wallace for a good reference point. Add Shane Hmiel to the meathead list.

Actually not long ago Pedie Allison gave away his trophys to kids at a car show we did at the Titusville McDonald's. He had all sizes of them and gladly gave them to the kids who came over to see his car. You should have seen their faces, they could not believe that someone would give them their trophy. So it does still happen but no one knows unless you are there.

                Good Guys Finish First

Everything I have seen of Carl is nothing but "CLASSY".
Teflon boy and the other 'brats' could sure learn a thing or two from other drivers like Carl Edwards. I know Kyle Petty and Michael Waldrip, and a few others, have charity organizations they support. BTW, can't forget the real classy Paul Newman. Cool Hand Luke will be missed.

RIP Jack Smith and Kim Brown. Many thanks for all you have done for our sport.

I still have a copy of National Speed Sport News with a picture of a teenaged Carl Edwards, in the classified section, under the heading of "Ride Wanted". Everytime I see one of those, I laugh to myself, thinking "yeah right buddy... if I'm a team owner, I'm gonna pick some clown out of the CLASSIFIEDS to drive my car!"

If there has been anybody over the last several years that got to the top on determination alone, it's Carl. Not money, family connections, Driver Development programs, an "in" with the factory people... nothing but talent and personality got him here. His life story would make a great Hollywood movie, but they would screw it up so bad, it wouldn't make an enjoyable story.

Two others whose life story would make an incredible movie, would be Ernie Irvan and Bobby Allison. You could tell their stories, word by truthful word, and nobody would believe they were true... it would look too much like a Hollywood fabrication.
