Racing’s Elite Weather the Storm
Showtime Speedway 3/19/2016 – by Shari Phillips
While many Florida short tracks were quick to pull the plug on Saturday night’s events, Showtime Speedway in Pinellas Park, Florida waited out the storm and the fans were rewarded with a night of great racing action.
To the delight of the fans, the BG Products Southern Sprint Car Shootout Series Winged Sprints ran two Heat races and a Feature event. Winged Sprints are popular for both their appearance and their ability to turn the ¼ mile asphalt oval in a mere 13 seconds. Saturday, the elite of the series, ventured out to brave the weather and join their peers to put on a racing event that brought the crowd to their feet.
The Sprints are famous for their 4-wide salute to the fans before the green flag is thrown. Fans rise to the occasion and wave furiously back with anything they have in their hands. Anticipation and the rumble of the motors is palpable.
Dave Steele would continue his dominance winning his 3rd race of the new series in front of a great crowd. Steele would pass early race leader Mickey Kempgens in heavy traffic and motor on for the win. Kempgens would hold on for 2nd rounding out the top 5 was Shane Butler, Sport Allen and Matthew Hall.
Probably the most notable maneuver was when the #99 of Matthew Hall spun a complete 360 degrees in turn 2 while the J1 of Michael Tharp and the 18 of Shane Butler successfully avoided contact and no caution flag was needed as Hall righted himself and the race continued.
The next event for the BG Products Southern Sprint Car Series will be back at Showtime Speedway on April 16 for round 4 of the 2016 Championship Chase. For update information visit our website at Southernsprintcarshootout.com or like out Facebook page.
