After years of just hanging out at the big track in Daytona, I opted to go see the World of Outlaws and UMP mods at Volusia this weekend instead of the Shootout/ARCA race. Great decision.

The atmosphere was electric, the crowd overflowed the grandstands -- even at $40/ticket -- and the racing was pretty good, too. It's nice that every ticket comes with a pit pass. We were also able to park right on the inside of turns 3-4 on Saturday night for an extra $10. Crazy how close you can get.

I've seen the crowds are pretty light at New Smyrna this week, but Volusia had record crowds this past weekend. I haven't been that crowded at a race track -- any race track -- in a long time. T'was great to see.

It was the same last year in the bitter cold...High ticket prices, cold weather, conflicting schedules, tire rules, lack of promotion,no toilet paper, etc, etc, etc,,,The asphalt guys are running out of excuses and are in denial. Most wont even click on this thread...

Simply a better product put out at the dirt tracks.

The DirtCar folks seem to get the little things right. The restrooms -- even the portaJohns -- had attendants. Folks were constantly being encouraged to go into the pits. Fireworks shot off before the features. Random kids were pulled out of the audience for the inversion draws. Drivers were interviewed while crews worked on the track between races. Group qualifying parlayed into hot laps for modifieds was a great way to save time.

It felt like a big deal and was treated as such. Better yet, the people in my group who were dragged to night one were all beating down the door to go to night two.

          Is it

Because of the racing surface or how the program was run ?

It is a some of both, but at the end of the day it is the product they are offering and the way they present it that really is first class. Same could be done on asphalt but not sure if the product would be avilable on asphalt.

Having the IMCA mods as a backbone of sorts for the show and then the headliners for the other 2-4 night shows is really working.

There is some awesome racing going on at NSS. But i think its mostly about accomidations, promotions and running the show.
