  • If you were going to build...

If you were going to build a 4 cyl bomber type car, what make model and year car would you be looking for and why?

Needing some basic info, it seems like a lot of type cars work.

I think just based off experience in the days of the old style stock mini's, such as Dodge's, Mustangs, VW's, etc, certain tracks favored certain cars. I ran Seekonk, a 1/3 mile that is really 1/4 in Mass and my 2.2 Dodge was great for that track bc it had tourque off and had the right transmission gearing. I have noticed the same premise holds true for that type of car at Auburndale. Now, that same car wasn't so hot when I went to Thompson, which is a banked 5/8 bc it wasn't meant for top end, and really, my tranny options either have me too much gear, or not really enough. Mustangs would usually dominate.

Fast forward to the new style of multi valve fuel injected mini stocks, and I have noticed that the dodge neon's are the car of choice at Showtime. Why? I don't work on them anymore, so I'm not sure. Could be for the same reasons my old car was good at Seekonk. Gearing is important. At Desoto, Acura/Honda type cars seem to dominate. There are allegations as to why, but them ending up in victory lane is pretty much the usual end result. So I think the car you build is probably going to matter depending on what track you want to concentrate on. Maybe someone else could offer advice as to what runs good at Citrus and Auburndale. What's the matter Randy? Tiring of the old Bomber?

Thinking about the future. Not sure what will happen with the V8 bomber type cars. Also I am not going to spend thousands of dollars to convert my car to something else that may be at the end of its cycle.

I have always raced on what I can afford to lose. Never really cared about the purse. The front wheel drive 4 cyl cars look like they could be fun for the investment it would take. Not sure how much fun they are to race though.

Also I am not getting any younger but still enjoy racing. Would like to keep doing it for a while yet.

How much for the 91 car?

4 th gen Honda Prelude, or Acura integra(the ones with the bug eyes head lights). In about 15 years i think the Subaru BRZ or Scion Frs Will be good choices.
lets all take a long ride on a short bus.

I quit fishing because no one was standing at the docks handing out money when i got back, why did you quit racing?

            Randy,

I never have followed that class closely as I am, er, old school and like V8s.

Of course, you should race what suits, so this is how I would approach it:

First, decide where you would like to run, presumably close to home, but again, up to you.

Through one means or another try to contact the promoter(s) to get a sense of where they intend to go with the class. Bear in mind it could change in a New York heartbeat regardless of what you hear, but what else do ya have to go on?

Go to the stands, find out what is running up front, what handles, what has motor, and what looks like there are a bunch in the junkyard.

Next, go to the pits. Mingle, learn more. Check parts prices. Check aftermarket "racing" parts prices.

And finally, once you have sized up the direction you want to go in, if there is a built car of that model which is not beat down and which has a good cage and safety parts available at a good price, make the leap.

I don't know where you are intending to run most often or the rules per se but from what I have seen at Showtime and Auburndale Chrysler products seem to be the way to go.That usually tends to point to an advantage in the rule book or parts supply to do so.If Desoto is the intended stomping grounds it appears to be the foreign imports.

I was told Desoto is also allowing aftermarket springs and making them less stock these days. The fastest Showtime car can't win there from what I can see. Maybe if they ran there more as the Desoto guys have it dialed in pretty good.
