PRO LATE MODELS GO FOR ANOTHER 50 LAPS SATURDAY NIGHT AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY
This Saturday night is week number 32 of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series at New Smyrna Speedway and it's also O'Reilly Night. You can stop by any of the local O'Reilly Auto Parts stores and pick up a $5 off admission coupon. Racing this week will feature a Pro Late Model 50-lap contest along with the Sunshine Seamless Gutters Mini Stocks for 50 laps too, a 25-lap run for the Speedway Flooring Super Stocks and 20 laps for the Bombers. Pony Tales will again be at the track with a mini petting zoo and pony rides for the kids.
Zach Jarrell opened up his point lead just a bit with his fourth place finish last week. Jarrell, who had Jason Boyd work on his car all last week to "get some more speed," now leads Blaise Hetznecker by seven points with just this race and one more on October 31 to go. Hetznecker is only three markers up on third place Noah Cornman, so this point race is far from being over.
Brad May has not run every Pro Late Model event this year but when he does he usually finds victory lane is his potent Bobby Sears Racing Special out of Oviedo now sponsored by Longwood drywall contractor R. K. Edwards, Inc. May will be shooting for his eighth win of the season this week. The only other driver to win more than one feature this year is Rich Clouser who has set a big goal of finishing in front of May this week. There will be several "heavy hitters" in the field including Daniel Keene, Jr., who saw his string a 50-lap victories broken a few weeks ago, and Tim Russell who is still trying to get the speed he needs out of his Pro Late Model while dominating the recent big Super Late Model events. Other drivers expected include Cody Blair, Colby Clements, Dalton Smith and several more.
Ted Vulpius has a good 22 point edge on Brad Blanton in the Sunshine Seamless Gutters Mini Stock point chase as he closes in on yet another championship. Justin Reynolds has all but wrapped up the 2015 Speedway Flooring Super Stock title as he has a comfortable 60 point edge over defending champion Shannon Kelly who has moved into second in points ahead of Bobby Holley. Reynolds' top competition and the only car to beat him this year, the "Tribute to the King" #43 driven to victories this year by both Butch Herdegen and Mike Trocki, will more than likely not be in the field Saturday night as Herdegen is away on business and Trocki will be racing karts with his 12-year-old son who is in line for a championship at the track they compete at. In the Bombers, Aaron Overman is four points up on James Skinner but there are still three races left in their season.
Pit gates open at 3 pm Saturday afternoon with practice slated from 4-6 pm. Grandstand gates open at 6 pm with the weekly pre-race party featuring food and drink specials at the Throttle to Bottle Pub along with live music courtesy of Pub 44 in New Smyrna Beach.
The Modifieds will qualify at 6:15 pm with racing starting at 7:30 pm beginning with a 25 lap feature for the Speedway Flooring Super Stocks followed by the 50-lap run for the Pro Late Models. After intermission the Sunshine Seamless Gutters Mini Stocks go at it for 50 laps and the Bombers wrap up the evening with a 20 lap contest.
Adult admission is $15 with all seniors (65+) and military with valid ID being admitted for $13. Kids 11 and under get in free.
The 50th Annual Florida Governor's Cup race presented by Tempaco is just one month away and a number of former winners have already indicated they'll be in attendance including Wayne Reutimann who was the first driver to have his name placed on the Cup in 1965 then scored a second time in 1973. Other former winners expected are Bobby Brack (1966), Don Gregory (1970), Jim Fenton (1979), possibly Mike Eddy (1980), LeRoy Porter (1983) and Dick Anderson (1988-89). Former winners David Rogers (1997 & 2010), Tim Russell (2009), Augie Grill (2012-13) and last year's winner Travis Cope will not only be there but are expected to compete as well. O
