  • Another Great Racing Venue Comes To A Sad End...

    From National Speed Sport News:

SYRACUSE, NY – DIRTcar Racing announced Tuesday this year’s NAPA Super DIRT Week, Oct. 7-11, will be the “Finale at the Fairgrounds” in Syracuse before moving to a new venue in 2016 following the State of New York’s announcement to remove the grandstands and mile-oval as part of the New York State Fairgrounds renovations.
“We thank the fans for all of their support throughout this process,” said DIRTcar Racing CEO Brian Carter. “We’re making big plans for this year’s event to make sure we close the record books with a bang. In addition to all of the racing action on the Moody Mile, we’re planning to honor past champions and have some special social events planned for our dedicated fans that have made the week ‘Racing’s Biggest Party’ each year. Reserved camping is sold out, but there is plenty of general camping still available. It certainly will be a bittersweet week, but I can’t wait to see all of the fans who come out to watch racing at the New York State Fairgrounds for the final time.”
Riding a groundswell of support, DIRTcar officials and Governor Cuomo’s office have reached an agreement to keep NAPA Super DIRT Week in Central New York for at least the next 10 years.
“Super DIRT Week is both a signature event for racing fans and a Central New York tradition – attracting thousands of spectators and pumping millions of dollars into the local economy,” Gov. Cuomo said. “From the beginning of this process, it was important to keep this major event in Central New York and I am pleased that all parties have been able to come to an agreement. Next year, race fans will be able to enjoy their favorite weekend of racing in a brand new facility.”
A new host venue will be announced as soon as the details are available. DIRTcar will also work with its most loyal fans, with a plan to give them priority as they select camping spots and tickets at a new venue. DIRTcar will reach out to each of its customers with updates as soon as they become available.
While this year is the 44th running of NAPA Super DIRT Week, auto racing has been intertwined with the New York State Fairgrounds for more than 100 years. Buzzie Reutimann won the first two NAPA Super DIRT Week crowns in 1972 and ’73, but Brett Hearn’s six Syracuse 200 victories are the most by any driver at the event’s premier race.
