SPORTSMAN BOUNTY INCREASES ON PATRICK THOMAS FOR SATURDAY NIGHT AT NEW SMYRNA
SPEEDWAY
Action returns this Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway for week 20 of the
NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series after week 19 was rained out last
Saturday evening, just the second time this regular season that Mother Nature
has been victorious.
Four classes are slated to take to the track this week including the
fan-favorite Sportsman cars, Super Late Models, Modifieds and the Bombers.
Patrick Thomas of Oviedo did not cross the finish line first in the Sportsman
feature two weeks ago but after apparent winner Sean Bass was disqualified in
tech, Thomas, who took the checker in second, ended up with his seventh win of
the year as E. J. Wilcoxson of American Auto, Tires & Service was able to keep
the $300 bounty he had placed on Thomas in his pocket. American Auto has
increased the bounty to $400 this week if anyone can (legally) beat Thomas to
the checkered flag. Thomas must be running at the end of the race for the
bounty cash to be collected. Another strong field of cars is expected to be
drawn to the track this week as 27 machines took the green flag two weeks
ago.
By virtue of his seven wins, Thomas has opened up a big 41 point edge over
Junior Beckner with Barrington, NH driver Sandy Lee in third, some 52 markers
behind Thomas. A total of 46 different drivers have raced in the Sportsman
class so far this season.
The Super Late Models return for their first regular season point race since
June 20th. Anthony Sergi of Oviedo leads fellow Oviedo resident Brad May by
just two points going into this weeks activity with Orlando veteran David
Rogers just seven points out of first. Sergi and May have split the first
four races of the year, each taking a pair of victories. It's not known if
Tim Russell, coming off an impressive showing in the recent Clyde Hart
Memorial Bright House Challenge Series point race, will be in the field.
Recent bad luck for New Smyrna's Jerry "The Hammer" Symons has seen Matt
Wheeler cut into Symons' point lead as he is now just eight tallies behind
while James "Tank" Tucker has closed to within 18 points of Symons. Several
very fast cars have made their presence felt in the class over the last month
with Robert Deal and Dillon Wood both making a trip to Hampton Inn victory
lane.
James Skinner of Melbourne stays atop the Bomber point chase over Orlando-area
drivers Aaron Overman and Shane Sutorus.
Pit gates open Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm with open practice from 5-6:30
pm. Grandstand gates open a 6 pm with all fans invited to come out early for
the weekly pre-race party featuring live music at the Throttle to Bottle Pub
courtesy of Pub 44 in New Smyrna along with $1.00 beers and half-off bar food
menu.
Racing begins at 7:30 pm with heat races for the Modifieds, Sportsman and
Bombers. Following intermission the Modifieds are up first for their 25-lap
feature followed by a 35-lap contest for the Super Late Models. The Sportsman
then go for 25 circuits with the Bombers wrapping up the evening with a 20-lap
run.
Adult admission is $15 with all seniors (65+) and military with valid ID
getting in for $13. As always, all kids aged 11 and under are free.
Other notes:
Track owner Robert Hart is continuing to make very good progress following his
recent surgery and is continuing the rehabilitation process. Please keep the
Hart family in your prayers. For updates on Robert, you can contact track
General Manager Kim Brown at the speedway.
A committee has narrowed down possible names of the New Smyrna Speedway shark
mascot to a list of 7 names. Now the committee is gridlocked and needs your
help. Please let us know what you think the name of our mascot should be from
the following list of possibilities:
1. Finley
2. Chum
3. Chompers
4. Sparky (Spark plug)
5. Turbo
6. Nibbles
7. Mako
Voting ends this week and you can vote at the speedway's Facebook page.
