What a memorable video!! Great tribute to a great sprint car outlaw. No wing, no side panels you could actually watch the drivers work their magic on the dirt. Two questions was the flagman Johnny Hicks as he sure showed class and was that Pancho Carter who congratulated Opp after race was over. I went in 1968 and flat tracking always makes for a memorable race.
In one race in Tampa after Jan beat Pancho, he wasn't as congratulatory. He was angry that the hippie beat him again and I watched Pancho pound his steering wheel in his car in the pits after the race was over...Pancho was USAC establishment and Jan was an original free spirited, anti-establishment outlaw that's one reason why some of us young folks then liked him.
Actually I kind of liked both. Jan for the same reason as you and Pancho for the accomplishments he and Steve Stapp had together. Steve was a frequent visitor during speedweeks and helped a lot of young guns with there career and I now enshrined in the Sprint Car Hall of Fame. Benji Mills a Florida skeeter and sprint car driver in the early 70s worked with Steve and spoke highly of him as well.
