BRIGHT HOUSE CHALLENGE SERIES SET FOR NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY THIS SATURDAY -
SPORTSMAN, MODIFIEDS & DOUBLE FEATURES FOR THE BOMBERS TOO
Week number 12 of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series will feature the
biggest week of racing at New Smyrna Speedway so far during the 2015 regular
racing season. The Super Late Models run their first event here for the 2015
Bright House Challenge Series and will be joined by the popular Sportsman
division, the Modifieds and the Bombers who run a pair of features to make up
from last weeks rained out event. It will also be "Harley Davidson Night at
the Races."
So far, only one event has been held for the Bright House Challenge Series
Super Late Models - the Icebreaker 100 back in February at DeSoto Speedway in
Bradenton. Jeff Scofield of Plant City earned the victory in that race and
will be looking to make it back-to-back wins this week. Defending Bright
House Series champion Jesse Dutilly of Bradenton is expected in the field as
well as current New Smyrna Speedway Super Late Model point leader Anthony
Sergi of Oviedo who has two victories already this year on the high-banked
half-mile track.
Other drivers expected include David Rogers and Brad May, both of Orlando,
Riverview's Joe Boyd, Daniel Keene, Jr. of Weeki Wachee, Longwood's Tim
Russell, Anthony Cataldi of Umatilla along with Michael Lira, Noah Cornman,
Tyler Scofield, Michael Atwell and Cory Spencer.
Patrick Thomas of Orlando, on the strength of four straight wins in the highly
competitive class, sits atop the Sportsman standings by 31 points over Donny
Williams of Tangerine and Apopka's Earl Beckner who are tied for second. Lee,
New Hampshire's Sandy Lee maintains fourth in points as one of several drivers
competing for the Jim Daley team housed at Sheppard Racing Enterprises in
Deland. Despite a rough outing in the 50-lapper two weeks ago, Richard
Goodrich is still fifth in points. Another strong field is expected this
Saturday night.
Things have not gone well for New Smyrna's Jerry "The Hammer" Symons in the
past two Modified events held here but he still sits on top of the point chase
by six markers. A trio of "Matthews" trail the leader as Matt Wheeler is
second, four points ahead of Matthew Green who is six points up on fourth
place Matt Jarrett. Tank Tucker of New Smyrna has moved into fifth in points
on the heels of back-to-back victories. Several other drivers have been
running stronger recently including former New Smyrna track champion Bobby
Blake of Eustis and Ocala's Scott Millar. Joe Jacalone of St. Augustine, who
recently returned to racing after a brief retirement, is actually hoping his
tow vehicle will cooperate this week. Jacalone was on his way to the track
two weeks ago but his truck broke down just 12 miles from his shop. "At least
it didn't break down 12 miles from the track... that would have been really
bad," joked Jacalone.
The Modified drivers will be racing this week with heavy hearts after learning
of the passing of noted Central Florida car builder Joe Harris. Many of the
cars currently running in the Modified division were built by Harris as the
open-wheel cars had become his specialty in recent years.
Pit gates open at 2 pm Saturday afternoon with practice slated from 3:30-6:15
pm. Grandstand gates open at 6 pm with a pre-race party once again at the
Throttle to Bottle Pub featuring live music, $1 beers and half-off bar menu.
Action begins with Super Late Model qualifying at 6:30 pm. Included in the
opening ceremonies Saturday evening will be the third visit of the year from
the Volusia County Corvette Association who will be in the parade lap, then
get a few "racing" laps around the famed New Smyrna oval. Racing will be a
features-only format starting at 7:30 pm with the make-up Bomber feature of 20
laps from last week followed by 25 laps for the Modifieds and a 25-lap run for
the Sportsman cars. Following intermission it's the Bright House Challenge
Series event for the Super Late Models for 100 green flag laps, then the
Bomber cars will close out the show with their regularly scheduled 20-lap
contest.
Adult admission is $20 with all seniors (65+) and military with valid ID
getting in for $18. As always, all kids aged 11 and under are admitted free.
