LADIES NIGHT AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY AS PRO LATE MODELS RETURN
Week seven of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series at New Smyrna
Speedway will feature four racing classes and it will be "Ladies Night" at the
track with $5 general admission for all the ladies. Racing on the high-banked
half-mile will feature the Pro Late Models, Super Stocks, Mini Stocks and the
Bomber cars.
The Pro Late Models have seen three different winners in their three events
held so far this year including Deland's Rich Clouser, Ray Black, Jr. of Palm
Coast and, most recently, Port Orange driver Michael Lira. Clouser, though,
is the only one to run all three races and he leads the points by virtue of
his opening night victory and a pair of second place finishes. Clouser
currently has a 10 point advantage over New Smyrna's Zach Jarrell. Jarrell is
just two pints ahead of third place Blaise Hetznecker and three points up on
fourth place Noah Cornman. Black and Lira are not expected to run the full
slate of Pro Late Model events as Black is competing with the NASCAR Camping
World Truck Series this year and Lira still plans on making several more
starts with the ARCA circuit.
Due to a rain out on April 11, the Mini Stock and Super Stock classes have
only raced twice so far this season. Ted Vulpius of Mims has won both Mini
Stock features and currently leads the points by five markers over Tavares
driver Brad Blanton who has finished second to Vulpius both times. Justin
Reynolds of Merritt Island has equaled Vulpius by winning both Super Stock
events and he leads the point standings by six points over defending champion
Shannon Kelly and is seven points up on third place Preston Hunt.
Shane Sutorus of Orlando now has back-to-back wins in the Bomber division
after he was awarded the win last week in tech when the apparent winner was
disqualified. Sutorus, who indicated on Facebook this week that he has picked
up a Pro Late Model ride in a car that should be ready in a few weeks, has a
comfortable 23 point advantage over Aaron Overman. James Skinner is third in
Bomber points, 25 behind Sutorus.
Pit gates open Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm with open practice slated from
5-6:30 pm. Grandstand gates open at 6 pm and early arrivals can visit the
Throttle to Bottle Pub for a pre-race party until 7 pm with live music, $1
Beers, and a half-price bar menu. Racing begins at 7:30 with heat races for
the Super Stocks, Mini Stocks and Bombers. After intermission, the Super
Stocks race for 25 laps followed by a 25-lap contest for
the Pro Late Models, 25 laps for the Mini Stocks and the evening wraps up with
a 20-lap finale for the Bombers.
Adult admission is $15 with all seniors (65+) and military with ID admitted
for $13. However, remember that all ladies will be admitted for just $5 this
week and, as always, all kids 11 and under are admitted free.
The speedway will also be holding an open practice session on Thursday
evening, April 23, from 6-10 pm. Pit gates will open at 5 pm with admission
being $10 at the pit gate only.
