not sure if you know about my 'toy'. A clone of the NAPA 15 Chevy, Butler built, retired Bush Grand National North car. I think it would make a great SCCA car for someone. Fresh motor,70 hot laps at NSS, and race ready..
Looking to sell it. It also has a second seat. Used to sell ride-a-longs at Ocala Speedway.. Let me know..

First... good to see JMITCH back on here... missed you... how's it going?
Talked to Jerry Symons Saturday and he was telling me it cost $11,000 to get the engine "refreshed" each time they do it... He says his sponsor foots the bill, so it only benefits him... You need a sponsor like that Jacko!

Yea 11,000 to refresh his motor and this is why this class will never amout to anything at NSS you have 3 cars competive cars thats it. not many people are sitting around with that kind of money to throw away. thats the cost of 3 brand new crate motors with change left over for a couple sets of tires. LOMAO 11,000 and they wounder why racing is dieing guys like this helped kill the class.Originally posted by ancrdave View PostFirst... good to see JMITCH back on here... missed you... how's it going?

I don't think it is fair to say someone like Jerry Symons is killing the class. He has been very possibly the longest running mod competitor at New Smyrna, and has supported the class thru thick and thin. He is doing what is allowed within the rules to win.Joe Jacalone

The conundrum is the size and banking of NSS vs the liberal OWM motor rules. OWM's are a much more successful class here on the West Coast because of the bigger purses and smaller tracks. Less HP and torque isn't such a bad thing on a smaller track with the 8" tire and stock OWM chassis. So, how can we boost OWM car counts at NSS? Well you never want to make anyone illegal in an effort to increase participation. So taking away Jerry and Tank's big HP motors is not the answer. However, something like this would work:

Yeah, I know it's a @#%?! Ford, lol. But, the motor makes real good power for a minimal price. If you made this (and IMCA legal motors) the motor of choice in conjunction with adding 100 lbs to the open motor cars, soon you could have a competitive field of OWM's with $6500 motors. Keep adding weight year after year and soon the big $ motors would be made obsolete and go bye-bye. At the same time the class would get back to it's sensible IMCA ruled roots. I bet guys like Diamond Jim and the other former Emod guys are already IMCA legal. No need to feel bad for "The Hammer". His sponsor can almost buy him 2 of these motors brand new instead of rebuilding the money hungry monster. The show would get more even and better and 500 hp wouldn't look like an Emod goin' down the chute. Just my opinion. However, a motor that costs $11k to rebuild running for $600 to win is not good for car counts.Last edited by scottgarrity07; 03-25-2015, 10:10 AM.

SG--Regardless, any move will make some unhappy.
Emods--(virtually) nobody liked 'em.
Fords--same, except without the virtually part (just kidding, FOMOCO fans...). Still, an expense, bell housing, front weight, all that...
So, as long as nobody's happy, how about a $5-6000 claim? Sombody would buy a Daddy Warbucks motor or two and he would be figuring out how to build 'em for that--as would everybody else.
When it shook out in a year or two the could write rules to match what was in most of those motors (in other words, a 20 year reset of the money game).

You don't have to run the Ford. It just makes the most bang for the buck. Any other IMCA legal combination (crate OR built) makes sense. I never liked the claim thing. Too many dirty deals are possible. I also don't think it's fair (unless the claim actually matches the value). I know IMCA does it, but I still don't like it. I think my idea is a sexier proposition, coming from a racer who pays all his own bills point-of-view. IMCA rules could be phased in eventually. There's a reason the IMCA mods are probably the most successful division nationwide. A good, competitive, and affordable evenly matched class with enough HP to keep fans excited. (BTW, this Ford weighs only 10 lbs more than an ALUMINUM headed Chevy. Less than a steel head Chevy motor) .Last edited by scottgarrity07; 03-25-2015, 10:48 AM.

Seems I remember someone told me long ago that the OWM class was slated the 'poor man racing division'. You could take a chassis and build your own body with no front fenders and get a good motor from the junk yard to go racing. We still have 2 of those cars around. The 21 and 90 OWM at NSS..
The e-mod class would have been better if allowed to run Sportsman motor rules and a 4 barrel carb. My e-mod motor with a 4 barrel carb and roller rockers was very competitive at Ellisville(Lake City) speedway. With a 2 barrel ran very well at Bronson and Citrus with the open mods. Those are handling tracks with no big HP needs..
BTW my motor was a former sportsman and made at 400 hp. It's for sale now with only 3 races (1 win) on it..
Just my 2 cents worth here..

Oh its just not him its a few others too. not everybody has a sponsor and thats why this class only has about 3 cars that are competive.at NSS and nobody is going to join this class. all you have to do is watch the race see for yourself. jim you are right this started out as a cheap class junk yard motors and it is all the tracks fault that it got out of hand. back in the day when it started 30/ 40 mods with junk yard motors.Originally posted by jacko241 View PostI don't think it is fair to say someone like Jerry Symons is killing the class.
