  • Aug. 16 at DSS - TBARA Champion Troy Decaire joins Desoto Champ Karts for Tribute

The "Thundering Herd" of the Desoto Champ Kart Series will make it's sixth appearance of 2008 at Desoto Super Speedway in Bradenton, on Saturday night, August 16.

The Desoto Champ Kart Series is proud to announce that the August 16 race will be dedicated to the contributions and memory of the late Don MacCalla of Tampa.

    Don MacCalla Tribute Webpage: http://www.desotochampkartseries.com/tribute.html

    Series Website: http://www.desotochampkartseries.com

Don MacCalla began his racing career in the Tampa area, racing both full-bodied and sprint cars. Don started karting in 1985 at Fruitland Park, after quitting stock cars. Over the next few years, Don traveled to tracks throughout Florida including; Seffner, Lakeland Tri-Oval, Sarasota, Sunshine Speedway, Naples, Maxville, Dirt Devils, Dade City, Top Gun, Brooksville and Auburndale. His daughter Lorrie began racing with him in the late 1980's.

In 1995, Don received his first set of tech tools. Immediately, he became hooked... Don eventually became known at "the" tech guy around Central Florida tracks for many years. Don also served as the tech man for the Tri City Kart Club at Desoto Super Speedway. Don cared about every karter, especially the kids, and always made an extra effort to prevent a karter from leaving the track angry, regardless of what happened during a race.

For several years (2000-2003), Don also campaigned two champ karts, giving other drivers an opportunity to race his karts. One of those drivers that drove for Don was the 2007 TBARA Winged Sprint Car Champion Troy Decaire. And.... Troy Decaire will join the Desoto Champ Kart Series for this event on August 16! Although Troy's schedule is extremely tight, he also said that he is "99%" sure that he will bring his feared red #5 champ kart with him to the track, to compete for the win!!!

One of Don's proudest memories came in 1993, when daughter Lorrie (then a Senior in High School) won the Stock Lite championship at Seffner Speedway, before it closed. Lorrie won over 80 races that year, and it was a season that Don always recalled fondly. Don passed away in 2007, just two weeks shy of his 60th birthday.

In remembering her father, Lorrie said "He was my most fierce competitor and my best friend all rolled into one."

On August 16, Lorrie will join the Desoto Champ Kart Series as our special guest. A unique trophy will be made for this event. In addition, Lorrie will drive a champ kart in the race. It will be the yellow #68 champ kart, the same colors and number that her dad raced for many years.

The drivers will race to the white flag, and then will coast down into the infield. If Lorrie's yellow #68 champ kart is still in the race, she will continue around the track, taking the checkered flag in honor of her dad.

Immediately following the feature, Desoto Super Speedway track owner John Sarppriacone has graciously agreed to allow all karting crew in the back gate, to walk across the infield to the start/finish line, to join the karters for a Don MacCalla Tribute Race Memorial Photo.

In addition, John has also agreed to open the pitgate below the flagstand, to allow any interested karting family and crew from the front grandstand to join the drivers and crew for the photo! Please come to Desoto Super Speedway on August 16, and join us in the Don MacCalla Tribute Race photo. Everyone is welcome to join us in a tribute to a special man. Thank you John (!) for your flexibility, in making this night very special for all involved.

Don MacCalla's daughter Lorrie will present the trophy to the winner in Victory Lane.

We are also looking for additional sponsors, that would be willing to post a prize for the 6th through 15th place finishers. Prizes could be as simple as a shirt, hat, part, coupon, etc. Any prize is welcomed. We'd like to make this a special event for all involved. All prize sponsors will be recognized at the champ kart driver's meeting. Please contact series director Phil Harp at 727-510-5401 if you'd like to donate any prizes.

The prizes for the winner of the Desoto Champ Kart Series "Champ Kart Challenge" are growing!!!!! Each race, the Champ Kart Challenge jar will be placed on the series registration table. Any driver or person in the pits (from any division) is welcomed to fill out one slip, to predict the top five feature finishers, in the correct order.

If any driver or person in the pits correctly picks the top five feature finishers on August 16, in the correct order, he/she will win all the prizes in the jar! In addition to the $15 GiftCard for Regal Cinemas, $25 GiftCard to AppleBees , a $15 giftcard to StarBucks and a $10 Bill , a $20 Bill has now been added to the jar (total of $30 Cash)! Thanks to Lithia resident Rance Williams for donating the additional $20 to the jar!

If these five prizes go unclaimed, another prize will be added at the next event. The prizes will continue to build throughout the year, if noone correctly predicts the order of the top five feature finishers!!!

And, participation is entirely FREE!!! If the Champ Kart Challenge goes unclaimed through the final race of the year, the contents of the jar will be donated to the series, to be given to the participants (either as door prizes for next year, or to be included with the 2008 year-end awards funds)!!!

Even if you are alone, don't own a champ kart, or don't know anyone with this series, please feel welcomed to come down into the pits this Saturday night, and hang out with the Desoto Champ Kart Series drivers and crew. This is one of the friendliest groups of racers you will find anywhere.

I haven't watched your series race yet, but you sure do one of the best PR jobs I've seen. Nice looking posts, and write ups. Keep it up. Other promoters, take a lesson from this person.

I'm impressed, DeCaire and Butler are running these karts instead of taking their wings off their regular rides and hitting Citrus County this weekend.

Anyone know how much one of these things costs?

You can buy a used kart, with engine, clutch, and tires for around $2,800. To get dialed in you'll need to spend about $800 to freshen the engine w/FKA carb, $250 for a new set of tires, and about $150 to scale and set-up the kart. These are ball park numbers, if you know a guy who knows a guy kinda deal. Not trying to sound real pricey, just realistic. Besides, it's still $20,000 less than my SLM 10 years ago, and a lot more fun.

Desoto Super Speedway is printing the track program for tomorrow night's race, and sources have told us that Saturday nights program will be dedicated to the memory of Tampa racer and karting supporter Don MacCalla! Thanks very much to Fabienne for all the work she puts into the DSS Programs, and for helping the Desoto Champ Kart Series to honor the memory of a kind and caring man!

In addition, the series is planning to display the SIX FOOT TALL TROPHY this Saturday night, in front of the main grandstands! This trophy has been donated by 2007 TBARA Sprint Car (and 2008 Points Leader) Troy Decaire, for the feature winner of the Don MacCalla Tribute Race!

Immediately following the champ kart feature, any interested fans in the main grandstand, and crews from the back gate will be allowed to join the racers on the frontstretch, for a Don MacCalla Tribute Photo. Please join us on the track, along with Troy Decaire, Shane Butler, Dustin Chisholm and many other racing notorieties, for the photo. Daughter Lorrie MacCalla will present the trophy to the feature winner.

Twenty champ karts came to Desoto Super Speedway this past Saturday night, to take their shot at winning the Don MacCalla Tribute Race.

And when the dust had settled, the Desoto Champ Kart Series had it's first female winner in history! Tara Henderson from Loxahatchee took the win, followed by late model driver Alan McKinney in second, with 2007 TBARA Champion Troy Decaire finishing third.

For those fans who don't follow karting circles, Tara "The Terror" Henderson is one of the toughest "money racers" in Florida, routinely pulling into dirt and pavement tracks across the state, and leaving with the winner's bounty. She is also a many-time winner on the tough Florida Karting Association (FKA) series, and the WKA Florida Dirt Divisional Series (FDDS). And don't let her innocent looks fool you... Just ask Super Late Model Driver Jeff Choquette about Tara's ruthless dimeanor behind the wheel......

Congratulations to Tara and the Cutting Edge Kart Shop, for winning the Don MacCalla Tribute Race!

Thanks to John Sarpriaconne and Fabienne for making the night so memorable for many people.
