  • ACT. Just A Thought

Just a thought about the state of racing affairs in Florida.

Looks like New Smyrna speedway has done a good job this speed weeks, good car counts and racing. Thank you.

ACT tour likewise and congrats on your car counts and loyal following of northern racers.

However I just wonder how the tracks in Florida can struggle to get 20 or more cars for a big race event of 100 laps or more. Yet the northerners have invaded us in large numbers. ACT race last night especially brought this too my attention. A stand alone race for the ACT cars and drivers, a full field of 26 cars from way far north. The most interesting part is not the car count either, but how they can run 100 laps caution free. Most of these guys have never seen the track before. One thing I did notice though, this cannot be attributed to the monopoly of the 3 ring circus, of the so called engine builders we have in Florida. There were at least seven builders I saw listed for the ACT tour.

    Just a thought.

Do not compare northern activity at this time of year to southern racing. The northern gentry see this as a racing/vacation for their teams and families. Because of the weather they run a much shorter season than the south. The southern tracks run almost 12 months a year putting tremendous financial pressure on the weekly racer thus smaller fields for even the larger races. I have often wondered what racing would be like if the southern tracks would take of the rain months in the summer and concentrate on the rest of the year. Yes it would mean split seasons but it would be one hell of a lot kinder for the racers.

They probably had their last race in September up there. They have been holed up in their shops dyeing to get to Florida to race, Like egs stated, they race half if not less than we do in Florida.
They probably don't run spec or crate motors up there either. Thats what killed the local engine builders. buy a crate motor for 5k or rebuild a built motor for 20K.

But then you take that 5 grand engine and send it off to a engine builder that knows the tricks to these engines and for another 5-6 grand to make it better along with buying light weight low resistance transmissions, low drag-resistance differentials and quick change gears, hub bearings and so on.

ACT has this all covered. 8 approved engine builders overseen by one builder to only blueprint the Ford or Chevy crate and sealed with their own seals. Only two aporoved tranny builders selling one allowed tranny.
