The 49th annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing continued on a
Valentine's day Saturday night with a big six feature program on another
unseasonably cold Florida evening.
Things got very hot though during practice as something happened to Jordan
Ives' Super Late Model going into turn three and he smashed into the wall.
Ives' car burst into flame but he emerged unhurt before fire totally engulfed
his machine and the track surface as well. Track crews got the huge fireball
under control quickly saving possible damage to the track. Ives' car was
completely destroyed.
The big event of the night was the season-opener for the Joey Coulter Florida
Pro Truck Series. Port Charlotte's Michael Burns, who won the tune-up race
for the Trucks on night one, set fast time at 20.240 seconds while defending
Truck Series champion Becca Monopoli was second quick at 20.294.
With the top five in qualifying inverted for the green flag, Rodney Haddock
had the pole position with Kody Jett to his outside. Jett grabbed the early
advantage and led the first three laps before Whitney Poole and Eddie
Lichtenberger locked horns sending Poole into the inside wall on the back
stretch. Both were able to continue.
On the restart it was Monopoli moving to the lead bringing Burns with her.
Burns wasted little time in taking over and he made the pass on lap seven.
Burns was pulling away when the second yellow flag of the race came out on lap
31 as Vance Hall spun in turn two. Danny Anderson, who started ninth, moved
to third spot on the restart and began to challenge Monopoli for second just
before Poole and Brian Lynch. Jr. crashed hard on the front stretch. Both
drivers were OK but done for the night.
The rest of the race ran under green flag conditions as Burns simply left the
field in his wake to sweep the weekend. Monopoli came home in second place
ahead of Anderson. Fourth went to Blake Haddock who just held off J. R.
Garcia III at the checker. Completing the top ten were Jett, Rodney Haddock,
Eddie Lichtenberger, Dean Butrum and Robert Strader, Jr.
The Super Late Models were close in qualifying after Zane Smith's lap of
17.335 was disallowed due to soaked tires. Fast time then went to Canadian
Martin Latulippe at 17.505 seconds, just a bit quicker than Ty Majeski who
came in with a lap of 17.517. Third in qualifying was the 17.550 lap of
Harrison Burton.
The top ten qualifiers were inverted and that put Garrett Jones of
Mooresville, NC on the pole with Roscoe, Illinois driver Austin Nason to his
outside. Nason zipped out to an early advantage while fast-timer Latulippe
got very loose on the opening lap and went high in turn four losing several
spots. On lap three, something happened to Harrison Burton's car going down
the back stretch and he spun in turn three. Before the smoke cleared the cars
of Ryan Moore, Stephen Nasse, Drew Brannon, Gus Dean, David Rogers and Josh
Collins were involved in one way or the other. Burton, Moore and Brannon were
done for the night.
Jones moved to the lead on the restart but only one lap could be completed
before Tyler Dippel, Anthony Sergi, Spencer Davis and Brandon Oakley crashed
in turn two. Only Davis could continue. Jones continued to lead after the
restart as David Garbo, Jr. moved his "Flying Lobster" into second as the
field settled into some green flag racing until Nasse's car stalled in turn
two on lap 17 to bring out the yellow.
Garbo drew alongside Jones on the restart but had to give way to a high-flying
Ty Majeski who took second on lap 20. Majeski quickly reeled in Jones only to
see caution fly on lap 21 as Latulippe spun off turn four in a big cloud of
smoke. Jones again set the pace as the field went back under green but
Majeski was not to be denied as he moved in for a great side-by-side duel with
Jones. Fast qualifier Latulippe retired from the race on lap 28 while Majeski
finally made the pass for the point on lap 29. The Wisconsin native sped away
to a big win, his first-ever at New Smyrna Speedway.
Jones held on for second over Paul Shafer, Jr. who had his second straight
top-three finish. Joey Mucciacciaro took fourth followed by Steve Wallace.
Bobby Wilberg was sixth while 16-year-old Natalie Decker had a super run for
seventh after starting next to last in the huge field. Rounding out the top
ten were Austin Nason, Garbo and Zane Smith who started dead last after his
qualifying DQ.
Chuck Hossfield topped the Tour-Type Modified field in time trials for the
second consecutive night turning in a lap of 17.037 seconds. Second quick was
Ryan Preece at 17.060 ahead of the 17.200 lap of Kevin Goodale. The first six
in qualifying were inverted for the start with J. R. Bertuccio starting from
the pole and night one winner Justin Bonsignore outside of him.
Bertuccio took the early advantage and led the first five circuits before
Bonsignore moved him out of the way and led a train of cars to the front.
Bonsignore led just two laps before Preece zipped by and took over the top
position while Bertuccio was all the way back in seventh.
Mike Bolona spun on lap 16 to bring out the first caution of the event then
Goodale tapped the wall on the restart, slowed and pitted but did not bring
out the yellow flag. The caution did fly a second time on lap 21 as Kirk
Totten spun in turn two. At this time third-running Spencer Davis came on pit
road and retired with a rear end leak.
Preece drove away on the restart as Hossfield moved to second on lap 27 but
was well behind Preece at this point. However Paul Hortwig. Jr. spun in turn
two on the 29th lap giving Hossfield his shot at Preece. Brendon Bock spun
just after the restart to keep the yellow out. Preece held off Hossfield to
the finish as he had the stronger car at the end plus was able to pass tech
after being disqualified from his apparent win on night one.
Hossfield claimed the second spot while Bertuccio rebounded for third spot
passing Bonsignore with two laps left. Jimmy Zacharias came home in fifth
trailed by Dalton Baldwin, Danny Watts, Brendon Bock, Dillon Koptec and
Hortwig, Jr.
For the second night in a row, Tyler Thomas of Collinsville, OK and his Tim
Russell Driver Development car set fast time for the PPG Architectural
Coatings Pro Late Models at 18.162 seconds, just a tick of the watch quicker
than the 18.171 lap turned in by Michael Lira of Port Orange and Spencer
Davis, who toured the half-mile third fast at 18.181.
The top ten in time trials were inverted for the start of the 35-lap feature
putting Thomas' TRD teammate Sheldon Creed on the pole but it was outside pole
man Todd Stone who grabbed the initial advantage. As the field started the
second lap, Tim Sargent tapped Matt Wallace into a spin with Wallace backing
hard into the turn two wall. Both cars kept going and came to pit road but
neither could continue.
Stone continued to set the pace as night one winner Derek Scott, Jr. nearly
lost it on lap five coming down the front stretch before gathering it in,
losing a few spots in the process. Spencer Davis moved into second at this
point and began to press Stone for the lead eventually taking over the top
spot on lap nine. Caution flew on lap 12 as Chuck Tuck spun into the turn two
wall although he was able to continue. At this point several drivers were
reporting fluid on the track and the field was brought down pit road for a
leak check. The car of Erica Thiering was found to have a hole in the
radiator while fluid was also found coming from Scott Reeves' machine.
On the restart Thomas moved into second and closed on Davis but after a few
laps Davis began to pull away once again. Lap 28 saw Bert Longin spin in turn
one for the final yellow flag of the race. On the restart Thomas dove under
Davis and took the lead but it only lasted for three circuits before Davis
used a banzai move in turn three to re-claim the point. Davis led the rest of
the way to take the win and this night his car passed tech with flying
colors.
Thomas came home in second trailed by Stone, Creed and Lira. Sixth through
tenth were Ryan Miles, Dalton Armstrong, Fredrick Moore, Chuck Tuck and Larry
Gelinas.
Kevyn Terry of Citra set quick time for the Florida/IMCA Modifieds with a lap
of 18.447 seconds topping second-quick Jerry "The Hammer" Symons who tripped
the clocks at 18.499. Tank Tucker, night one winner Tim Moore and Camron Ray
were third through fifth in qualifying.
The top six in time trials were inverted for the start with veteran Jimmy
Britts of Orange Park on the pole flanked by Ray. Ray jumped out to the early
lead as the young driver from Homosassa was looking good. Lap ten saw the
first caution for an Alan Bruns spin in turn four.
Ray led the way again on the restart but the yellow flag was back out on lap
13 as something broke on Britts' car and he slammed the back stretch wall with
Bruns spinning to miss him. Britts was done for the night. On the restart
Tank Tucker zoomed past Ray for the lead just before Moore looped his mount
coming off turn four to bring out caution number three. Moore continued at
the back of the field.
Symons moved into second on the restart and took the lead from Tucker two laps
later. Things remained under green until lap 29 when Rob Cooper slapped the
front stretch wall twice before slowly taking his car to pit road. On the
restart, Bruns spun again in turn two but, before the yellow could be
displayed, the top three cars of Symons, Tucker and Terry tangled and crashed
on the back stretch. Symons and Tucker were done for the evening while Terry
pitted and continued.
Ray now found himself back in front but the restart would see Matt Wheeler
spin in turn one to bring the caution back out. Ray got the jump on the final
restart and drove like a veteran over the final six circuits to hold on for
the biggest win of his career having just moved into the Modified cars just a
few months ago. Moore put on the pressure but had to settle for second on
this night while Doug Moff came from ninth on the grid to finish third.
Fourth went to Robert Deal while Terry came back for fifth. Rounding out the
top ten were Bruns, Wheeler, Shain Held, Symons and Tucker.
The Mini Stocks saw Robbie Yoakam of Inverness set fast time at 20.666 seconds
with "Mr. Mini Stock" Ted Vulpius of Mims second quick at 20.882. The field
started straight up with Yoakam taking the lead at the onset only to be slowed
by three early cautions as Rick Sirmans had problems getting his car to keep
running and stalled on three occasions. Reid Christensen retired his car
after an early bout with the concrete as well.
Once the race finally got going, Vulpius moved to the point and led the next
24 laps before Yoakam reeled him back in and re-passed for the lead on lap 29.
Yoakam ran off and hid from that point as he won by a half straight over
Vulpius and James Ellis. Fourth went to Shawn Cater followed by Steven
Simpson, Sirmans and Christiensen.
