BURTON TAKES OPENING WORLD SERIES SUPER LATE MODEL FEATURE AT NEW SMYRNA
SPEEDWAY - TWO OTHER WINNERS DQ'D
A nice crowd braved extremely chilly weather Friday night at New Smyrna
Speedway but were treated to some incredible racing action as the 49th annual
World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing kicked off on a Friday the 13th that
would prove lucky for a few and unlucky for several more drivers and teams.
Forty-one Super Late Models were on the track for practice but just 35 of them
would take time in qualifying as several teams opted to "wait a night or two"
before competing and that may have been a good choice after the wreckers were
kept busy in the feature race later in the evening.
Ryan Moore of Mooresville, NC, a two-time winner at the World Series last
year, showed he was ready to try and duplicate his 2014 effort by setting
quick time of 17.621 seconds on the cold racing surface. Underfunded Brady
May of Orlando, showing no sponsorship on his self-owned car, shocked the
field by setting the second fastest lap at 17.658 seconds, just topping the
17.680 lap of Beloit, WI driver Bobby Wilberg. Fourth and fifth quick were
Spencer Davis of Dawsonville, GA and Harrison Burton of Huntersville, NC.
Stephen Nasse of Pinellas Park, expected to be one of the main contenders
after a sterling performance in the World Series last year, drove a bit too
hard into turn one on his first qualifying lap, got into the "marbles" and
pounded the wall, severely damaging his car. Rather than fix the machine, his
team sent for a back-up car located in North Carolina that arrived early
Saturday morning.
The top-ten in time trials were inverted for the 35-lap feature placing Gus
Dean of Bluffton, SC on the pole and Portage Indiana's Paul Shafer, Jr. on the
outside front row. Shafer got a good start and led at the drop of the green
but the action quickly came under caution during lap two as Josh Collins spun
his machine in turn two and backed slightly into the wall. Collins pitted but
came back on track with minimal damage.
On the restart things got ugly in a hurry with two big wrecks taking place.
Derek Griffith, Garrett Jones and Anthony Sergi had the initial contact in
turn one with Griffith hitting the wall hard. Griffith was done for the night
while Jones and Sergi continued. Meanwhile, while trying to avoid the first
wreck, several cars checked up and eventually crashed in turn two. This one
was much worse than the other incident as the cars of Chuck Tuck, Brendon
Bock, Scott Heckert, David Rogers and Daniel Keene, Jr. all had to be towed
from the speedway, each with major damage.
On the restart, Shafer streaked off to a big advantage over Austin Nason of
Roscoe, IL who held the runner-up position until a streaking Burton flew by
him on lap five. On lap ten Natalie Decker slowed suddenly on the back
stretch and was hit solidly by the car of Martin Latulippe but both kept going
straight and no caution was needed. Decker pitted then returned to action
while Latulippe continued only to be forced to retire a few laps later.
Up next was an awesome battle between youngsters Shafer and Burton that lasted
several laps before Burton finally slipped by and into the top spot on lap 25.
From there Burton drove off from the field to win by almost a full second
over Shafer who was very impressive in his first World Series event. Spencer
Davis crossed the stripe in third but was disqualified in tech for coming in
underweight moving Tyler Dippel of Wallkill, NY into the final podium
position.
Nason held on for fourth with Bobby Wilberg making a steady showing for sixth.
Rounding out the top ten were Ty Majeski, Joey Mucciacciaro, Gus Dean, Steve
Wallace and Zane Smith. Wallace, the 2014 World Series Super Late Model
champion, just hasn't been able to get his car up to the speed he wants all
week. Fast qualifier Ryan Moore never really got going in the feature and
finished, for him, a disappointing 11th.
With a lap of 17.026 seconds, Chuck Hossfield of Buffalo, NY led qualifying
for the Tour-Type Modifieds topping the 17.198 lap turned in by Ryan Preece of
Calverton, NY and the 17.206 lap of Kevin Goodale of Wading River, NY.
The top ten qualifiers in this one were also inverted for the start putting
Brendon Bock of Franklin Square, NY on the pole flanked by Al Ermmarino of
Brookhaven, NY. Spencer Davis had a transmission issue during the pre-race
warm-up session and pulled on pit road. He transferred into the back-up
Hillybilly Racing special but not before he was several laps down.
At the drop of the green, third starting Jimmy Zacharias blasted to the front
and stayed there until Ermmarino spun out in turn two on lap seven. Ryan
Preece turned up the wick and passed Zacharias on the restart and began to
leave the field in his wake leaving Zacharias, Justin Bonsignore and Hossfield
to have a spirited battle behind him. Hossfield looped his car coming off
turn four for the race's second caution on lap 30. Two laps later, Danny
Watts got spun coming down the front stretch, tagging the wall nearly head-on
and gathering up Ermmarino in the process. Watts' machine left a ton of fluid
on the track that took several laps to clean up as both his car and that of
Ermmarino had to be towed from the racing surface. Hossfield pitted during
the caution to replace a flat tire and returned for the restart.
As the field took the green with three laps left, Zachariarias got a bad
restart and lost two spots. Preece stormed off to an apparent easy victory
but it was negated in tech when his car came up 22 pounds light on the scales.
Bonsignore came across the line in second but was thus awarded the win with
J. R. Bertuccio taking second and Zacharias third. Kevin Goodale ran a steady
race for fourth and Floridian Dalton Baldwin had a nice run for fifth.
Completing the top-ten were Hossfield, Kirk Totten, Bock, Watts and
Ermmarino.
Collinsville, Oklahoma's Tyler Thomas, one of two drivers racing this week for
Tim Russell Driver Development out of Longwood, FL, was impressive setting
quick time for the PPG Architectural Coatings Pro Late Model class with a fast
lap of 18.291 seconds. Second fastest was Stephen Nasse of Pinellas Park,
tripping the clocks at 18.303 in the Kurt Jett Concrete Special out of Orange
Park. Third quick was Matt Wallace of Concord, NC at 18.335 followed by
Spencer Davis and local favorite Michael Lira.
The top eight in time trials were inverted for the start with Tim Sargent of
South Beloit, IL starting from the pole and the outside pole slot going to
Derek Scott, Jr. of Franklin, TX. Scott zipped out to an early lead while
Davis moved up quickly from his fifth starting spot to challenge finally
getting the lead with a daring pass on lap 17 as it looked like this one just
might go green to checker.
Things came to a quick slow-down though on lap 20 as the leaders were
threading their way through some lapped traffic that just did not want to get
out of the way. Davis and Scott nearly crashed coming off turn four as they
had to dive low on the track to avoid a slower machine but third and fourth
running Nasse and Lira got tangled up and crashed hard with both ending up in
the inside wall with badly mangled racers along with the car of Erica Thiering
who had been lapped earlier and got caught up in the mess. All three were
done for the night.
On the restart, Davis and Scott got into a sprited battle for the race lead
that was slowed again on lap 27 by a turn four tangle between Belgian driver
Anthony Kumpen and Larry Gelinas. Both continued with minimal damage. As the
field again took the green, Davis and Scott renewed their battle only to see
the yellow out once again on lap 30 as Chuck Tuck spun off turn two with
Kumpen and Sarah McKay tangling trying to avoid him. Only McKay was forced
from action.
Scott put his foot to the floor and grabbed the lead on the restart, but only
for one lap before Davis reclaimed the front spot to lead the remaining four
laps for an apparent win, but, like Preece in the Tour Modifieds, his car too
came up light on the scales (his second DQ of the night for the same
infraction) awarding the win to Scott, his first-ever victory at New Smyrna.
Matt Wallace came home with a strong second place effort with the show
position going to Dalton Armstrong of New Castle, IN. Thomas had a steady
effort for fourth followed by Sargent. Sixth through tenth were Sheldon
Creed, Ryan Miles, Todd Stone, Gelinas and Fredrick Moore.
Defending track and World Series champion Jerry "The Hammer" Symons of New
Smyrna Beach set quick time for the Florida/IMCA-Type Modifieds with a lap of
18.615 seconds topping the 18.649 lap of Citra's Kevyn Terry and the 18.674
lap of Doug Moff of Ft. Myers, FL.
For this race the top six were inverted putting Hunter Slayton of Richmond, VA
on the pole but it was outside pole sitter Tim Moore who zipped out to a big
early lead only to see the caution fly during lap two as Symons tapped his
arch-rival Tank Tucker into a spin going into turn three. Tucker was forced
to retire from the event while Symons was placed at the rear of the restart
line-up.
Moore simply drove off from the field as the race ran the rest of the way
under green. By the half-way mark, Moore was already a half straight up on
second-running Moff. Terry got by Moff on lap 30 but by then Moore was in a
different zip code as he won the race by just over three seconds. Terry took
a solid second trailed by Travis Eddy, Moff and Symons. The remainder of the
top-ten were Camron Ray, Robert Deal, Alan Bruns, Slayton and Dan Burden.
The 25-lap Pro Truck feature ran the entire distance under green without need
of a yellow flag. Pole sitter Becca Monopoli of Lakeland led the opening 15
laps but could not hold off a high-flying Michael Burns who methodically
worked his way from his sixth starting spot to the lead on lap 16. from that
point Burns never looked back as he took the win over Monopoli, Danny
Anderson, Blake Haddock and Rodney Haddock.
Racing action continues with night number two of the World Series on
Valentine's Day, Saturday night February 14th. The season opening points race
for the Joey Coulter Florida Pro Truck Series will go for 50 laps and the Mini
Stocks make their only appearance of the World Series with a big 75-lap event.
35 lap races are scheduled for the Super Late Models, PPG Architectural
Coatings Pro Late Models, Tour-Type Modifieds and the Florida/IMCA-Type
Modifieds.
