MODIFIED REUNION SHAPING UP TO BE A BIG EVENT AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY
The annual Modified Reunion continues to come together featuring a host of
former racing stars, car owners, builders and collectors from just about
everywhere who will converge on New Smyrna Speedway a week from Friday,
February 20th. The event traditionally takes place in the front parking lot
of the speedway during the day prior to the running of the Richie Evans
Memorial Tour-Type Modified race. The hours this year will be from noon - 5
pm.
The list of people coming to the event continues to grow each day. Every
year, co-organizer Geoff Yoder brings his Richie Evans Pinto to pace the field
for the Evans Memorial 100 and the car will be on display beforehand at the
reunion again this year. Other co-organizers are J. T. Dunn who always brings
something to show off and Ron Hess who is bringing his '34 Chevy Coach. Humpy
Wheeler drove this car in the Beach Parade last year. A Tiny Lund-driven '64
Ford Galaxie will try to be here, as well as former Busch Series Champion crew
chief Vic Kangas who hopes to make it. Richard Bowser may be bringing the
"last coupe to race on Long Island", the former Bob Krollage #67.
New England Modified racer Sonny O'Sullivan who has been racing here in
Florida in recent years driving Sprint and Dwarf cars is expected along with
former NASCAR driver Jack Anderson, Islip Speedway racer Bob Krollage who will
be bringing his beautiful #7-11 Coupe down here on his Jarzombek ramp truck
and Titusville's Tobi Smith will be bringing two, possibly three cars (Bob
Judkins #2x Pinto, #44 Chevy Cavalier, #04 coupe). Larry Larivee will be in
attendance with his Bob Polverari tribute #711 and Hank Goodrich will have his
new vintage car, a replica of the Fish Carburetor #M-3 that ran on the beach.
Jerry Mathis who raced out of the Buffalo, NY area and now lives in Ocala will
be at the reunion as will Gig Smith from Long Island. Al Jurkowski and John
Fodrowski are bringing their Cotton Owens vintage Modified. Rich Turner of
Port Orange is expected to bring his 1968 Mercury Cyclone Bud Moore #16 that
was raced in the 1968 Daytona 500 by Tiny Lund. Also expected are Bill Stock,
who raced at the legendary Danbury (CT) Race Arena, Bob June of Oswego, NY
Speedway Supermodified fame, Pennsylvania legend Gary Grim, Long Island native
Dan Watts and Jerry Morgan who has been involved in Modified racing for seven
decades.
Florida will be represented by former Florida Governor's Cup winners Bobby
Brack (1967) and Jim "Freight Train" Fenton (1979) along with veterans Will
Cagle and Joe Winchell among others. Bob Garbarino, owner of the famed
"Mystic Missile" Modifieds is expected as well as former Long Island racer
Richie Gomes who will bring his #20 vintage Modified car.
Noted car builder Don Turner, who owned the #18's that Dutch Hoag drove to
such success, will be in attendance along with Ron Buckner whose cars won the
prestigious Oswego Classic Supermodified race twice. New York Modified and
Sprint Car racer Mike van Dusen is expected along with Fred Strickland from
the Tampa area who owns several vintage Sprint Cars but has just recently
found, saved and restored an old Will Cagle Modified.
Another angle of this event is all the cool stuff that people come to display
(and sell). Former racer and now publisher Lew Boyd will be in attendance and
will have copies of his books and others from the "Coastal 181" collection.
Harold Frederick and Mark Box are historians of racing of all types and have a
ton of memorabilia to display while Dennis Daley has a collection of pictures
and programs that is priceless. Dick Montgomery will bring a die cast
collection of all the stars and heroes you could imagine and racing
historian/writer Eddie Roche will have copies of his book "Florida Motorsports
Retrospective Pictorial" available.
A reminder that the event is free of charge (unless you want to purchase
something), so come out, enjoy the day meeting some great people and looking
at some fantastic vintage racing machines.
