  • New Smyrna World Series Update 2/10/15

2015 WORLD SERIES OF ASPHALT RACING AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY JUST DAYS AWAY -
    MORE SUPER LATE ENTRIES CONFIRMED

With the 2015 World Series of Asphalt Racing just hours from getting under way
on Friday, the track is bracing for the huge number of teams that will be
competing during the opening weekend. Along with the Super Late Model, Pro
Late Model, Tour-Type Modifieds and Florida/IMCA-Type Modifieds that will run
all week, room has to be made for competitors with the NASCAR K&N East Series
along with the American Canadian Tour Late Models and Joey Coulter Pro Truck
Series machines as well as Mini Stocks that will run a special 75-lap event on
    Saturday night.

The Super Late Model ranks have swelled to 36 confirmed entries including
14-year-old Harrison Burton of Huntersville, NC, son of NASCAR Cup veteran
Jeff Burton. Burton won twice in Pro Late Model competition in the World
Series last year including the 100-lap event that was held for the class.
Burton's most recent visit to New Smyrna Speedway saw him finish a strong
third in the Florida Governor's Cup 200 for Super Late Models making a late
race pass of 2014 World Series SLM champion Steve Wallace to secure the podium
    finish.

Speaking of Wallace, he's back to defend his World Series title, but one of
his competitors will now be his cousin Matt Wallace who is the son of NASCAR
veteran Mike Wallace. Matt will make his first New Smyrna start against a
very strong field of drivers but thinks he can get the job done, including
    beating his cousin.

Gus Dean returns to New Smyrna Speedway looking for bigger and better things.
The 20-year-old Bluffton, South Carolina resident recently moved to
Mooresville, North Carolina to finish school and work in the race shop. The
move has allowed Dean and his team to focus more on their Super Late Model
program. Over the course of the last three years, Dean has been competing
both in the CARS Pro Cup Tour and different Super Late Model events with their
primary focus on the Pro Cup car, which he picked up a victory with at Memphis
(TN) Motorsports Park. But with the CARS Tour remaking themselves as a Super
Late Model and Pro Late Model Tour, Dean and his team are now focusing on
their Super Late Model program. Dean already has already competed at New
Smyrna this year in the Red Eye 100 where he finished 12th.

Entries have also been received from Portage, IN driver Paul Shafer, Jr.,
Derek Kraus of Stratford, WI and Lakeland, FL veteran Russ Shaw. 17-year-old
Shafer, the 2013 LM champion at Illiana Speedway, ran the ARCA CRA Super
Series last year where he was runner-up as Rookie of the Year and finished
fourth in points. Kraus, at just 12 years of age, comes from the Midwest
Truck Series where he finished fifth in the 2014 points chase. Shaw has been
a regular here for several years and, although he has cut back on his racing a
bit recently, always makes it a point to run the World Series.

In other news, don't forget about the annual Modified Reunion that takes place
in the parking lot of the speedway on Friday before the running of the Richie
Evans Memorial for the Tour-Type Modifieds. This years event will see a
number of vintage race cars on display along with all kinds of photos, model
cars and other memorabilia plus many of the great stars of yesteryear will be
on hand to greet fans and share old racing stories. The event takes place on
Friday, February 20th from noon until 5 pm, again in the parking lot in front
of the main entrance to the speedway.

New Smyrna race photographer Jim Jones will be shooting his 37th consecutive
    World Series!

Five Star Race Car Bodies and Racecar Engineering have signed on as a
contingency sponsors for The World Series while JRI Shocks will now be the
presenting sponsor of the Richie Evans Memorial Tour Type Modified 100 on
    Friday night, February 20th.

Live entertainment will be provided each evening from 6:30 to 7:30 pm before
the start of the racing activity. Featured performers will be Johnny Reed
Foley (Sunday only from 4-7:30 pm), Jeff Risinger, Ryan Robinette, The
Transfers, Eric & Davie, Josh Williams and Dane Colbert.

Steve Wallace's father, NASCAR champion and Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace will
be signing autographs before the races on Saturday, February 21st from 6-7 pm.
Make sure to get there early! The track is also working on getting some
other racing personalities to stop by during the week to greet fans and sign
autographs. Last year, 2014 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Jack Ingram said he
had more fun meeting fans at New Smyrna Speedway than anything else he did
    during Speedweeks.

Cold weather is expected for the opening few nights of the World Series but
the track is prepared to make you a bit more comfortable as 2015 World Series
long sleeve t-shirts, sweat shirts and hoodies will be available for purchase
    to help warm you up.

It looks like the number of entries for the pro's and the super's have flipped compared to previous years. I remember the super's being in the low 20's and the pro's being around 30. I wonder if people are figuring out it costs about the same...until its time for a motor.

When will the rest of the schedule be posted?

No problem Frassy... Looking forward to actually being able to be there this year... hopefully we'll get a good crowd...

I still think there will be a lot more in the way of Pro Lates... Usually about a third of the teams don't send in a pre-entry plus the mail has been unbelievably slow this year... Rumor has it a few of the ACT guys are going to hang around and run some Pro Late races too... Just wish they weren't bringing their weather with them!
