ENTRIES CONTINUE TO ROLL IN FOR NEW SMYRNA WORLD SERIES OF ASPHALT STOCK CAR
RACING
With less than a week to go, entries continue to come in for the 49th annual
World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway.
Official Super Late Model Entries are now up to 30 and include several more
drivers from Florida led by Stephen Nasse of Pinellas Park who won three SLM
features during the 2014 edition of the World Series along with finishing
second in points to Steve Wallace. That pair had some great battles last year
and are expected to renew their rivalry this year as Wallace returns to defend
his title.
Other Florida drivers on the entry list include Drew Brannon of Tampa, Matt
Montineri of Fleming Island and Kevyn Terry of Citra who will be racing a
Super Late Model for the first time here after competing in the Pro Late
Models. Terry has also entered the Florida/IMCA Modified action as well.
Scott Heckert of Ridgefield, CT returns to New Smyrna Speedway and will
compete both in the Super Late Models during the nine nights as well as in the
NASCAR K&N East Series race on February 15th. Driving for B. J. McLeod
Motorsports, Heckert was the 2012 Bright House Challenge Series Rookie of the
Year and scored numerous top-five finishes in some of the toughest Super Late
Model races in the country, including a podium finish at SpeedFest 2013 at
Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, GA. In 2013, Heckert made the move up
the racing ladder and into the NASCAR ranks with B. J. McLeod Motorsports in
the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. Heckert ran the full 14-race series schedule
and showcased his expertise by posting two top-10 finishes on the schedule's
two road courses at Virginia International Raceway and Road Atlanta in
Georgia. Last year, Heckert returned to the K&N East Series driving for car
owner Harry Scott. He ran all 16 races taking two victories at Watkins Glen
(NY) International at at Virginia International Raceway. He also won three
pole positions and finished eighth in points.
Another young Connecticut driver, Joey “The Mooch” Mucciacciaro, returns
to the World Series as the LFR Driver Development Group has announced Joey's
addition to their 2015 team. Mucciacciaro is a Wolcott, CT native and will
drive the No. 45 Chevrolet for LFR. In 2013, Mucciacciaro made his NASCAR
Late Model debut at the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing. In just his
second start, he visited victory lane and went on to secure two top-fives and
five top-ten finishes.
18-year-old Sarah McKay of Quispamsis, New Brunswick will be at the wheel of
both a Super Late Model and Pro Late Model in the World Series and it will
mark McKay's first stock car start south of the border. McKay, an
accomplished kart racer, made the move to Late Model Sportsman cars at
Speedway 660 in Geary, New Brunswick in 2013, winning the Rookie of the Year
in the class before moving to the Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour in 2014.
McKay became the first female in series history to run with the top regional
touring series in Atlantic Canada and took home the Exide Batteries Rookie of
the Year Award. She also took part in numerous open invitational events in
the area, highlighted by a top ten run in the prestigious 14th Annual Re/Max
250 at Speedway 660. On top of her racing career, McKay is also an
accomplished figure skater.
Kyle Plott of Marietta, GA turns 19 in March but already has an outstanding
resume that includes 15 total championships in Quarter Midgets, Bandoleros and
Legend Cars. He turned to the NASCAR Late Model Stocks last year where he was
the South Carolina Rookie of the Year. Look for Plott to adapt quickly to a
fast Super Late Model here at New Smyrna.
At 23 years of age, Hunter Robbins, who now calls Mt. Juliet, TN home, has
numerous wins and other accolades in Late Model Racing. A graduate of Auburn
University in his home state of Alabama, Robbins most recently won the pole
for the Snowball Derby in Pensacola before going on to finish fourth in the
race. He'll drive the same #7 Eagle Jet International/Goodrich Seafood car
that his girlfriend, Johanna Long, ran in the Florida Governor's Cup race at
New Smyrna last November.
Also just filing a Super Late Model entry is ARCA CRA Super series competitor
Brandon Oakley. The 20-year-old hails from Beavercreek, OH.
The Pro Late Model ranks have added entries from New Castle, IN driver Dalton
Armstrong along with Grant Griesbach who hails from Waukesha, WI. Veteran
driver Scott Reeves of Royal Palm Beach, FL has entered as has local favorite
Michael Lira of Port Orange.
Some 15 "official" entries have already been received for the Tour-Type
Modifieds led by a strong contingent of New Yorkers. Nine drivers from New
York have already entered including Jimmy and T. J. Zacharias from Candor,
part of the famed Zacharias racing family. Also headed south are Eric Goodale
of Wading River, Buffalo's Chuck Hossfield, Ryan Preece of Calverton, Justin
Bonsignore of West Islip, Riverhead's Daniel Watts, Al Emmarino of Brookhaven
and Lockport's Kirk Totten. Brendon Bock of Franklin Square is entered in
both a Tour Modified and in the Super Late Model division.
Defending World Series Tour-Type Modified champion Ron Silk of Norwalk, CT is
back to defend his title but with a new team this year while J. R. Bertuccio
of Statesville, NC is back for another shot at the New Smyrna high banks.
Matt Montineri of Fleming Island, FL has entered the Tour-Type Modified
competition and will also be a part of the Super Late Model action. Jeremy
Gerstner of Wesley Chapel, FL has not officially entered but plans to run both
a Tour-Type and Florida/IMCA-Type Modified during the World Series.
Just one out of state driver has filed an entry so far for the
Florida/IMCA-Type Modified competition. That driver is 25-year-old Travis
Eddy of Midland, MI, son of veteran driver Mike Eddy who had much success over
the years during the New Smyrna World Series. He is joined by a host of
Florida hot shoes including 2014 New Smyrna Modified champion Jerry "The
Hammer" Symons of New Smyrna, Bronson's Robbie Cooper, Alan Bruns of Clermont,
New Smyrna's James "Tank" Tucker, Tim Moore of Pinellas Park, Robert Deal of
Titusville, Homosassa's Camron Ray and Kevyn Terry of Citra who, as mentioned
earlier, will also be campaigning a Super Late Model.
A note to race teams: Trailers can be staged in the front parking lot of New
Smyrna Speedway until Wednesday, February 11 at 3 pm. The track will do early
parking on Wednesday from 3 pm until 8 pm. No one will be allowed to park in
the pits until 3 pm Wednesday. Teams that are testing Tuesday and Wednesday
will not be able leave their trailers in the infield and leave the property.
