TRUCKS AND SPORTSMAN RACE FOR 100 LAPS IN COULTER CHARITY RACE 200 WEEKEND AT
AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY
It's again time for the Joey Coulter Charity 200 Race weekend that is once
again being held at Auburndale Speedway. The ninth annual running of the
event will see a big change this year as the Pro Trucks will be competing as
they always have but will also be joined by the Sportsman cars for the first
time. Rather than run a 200 lap event, the two classes will run for 100 laps
in the Coulter Motorsports Charity 100 for the Sportsman and the Les and Judy
Smout Foundation Pro Truck 100.
Once again, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series star Joey Coulter has allowed
his name to be attached to the event and he puts in countless hours helping
with promotion while also trying to run a Truck Series team full time.
This year's charity events will benefit three families with three youngsters
that have battled various life-threatening diseases. Unfortunately,
four-year-old Logan Ressler passed away on October 28th from nueroblastoma
cancer. His family will still receive support from the event to help take
care of the incredible medical expenses they've incurred. The other two
families getting help this year from the race are the family of three-year-old
Emily Leasure who has leukemia and the family of eight-year-old Jayden Taylor
who has Autism and ADHD as well as some other problems. Last year over
$31,000 was raised for the families being helped and organizer Rick Bristol is
hoping to again equal or surpass that despite having many more problems
securing sponsorship in an economy that has really yet to turn around.
Action kicks off Friday with qualifying for both the Pro Trucks and Sportsman
cars with the Fast Time Awards being sponsored by Moyer Logistics of Tampa.
The Bombers and Scramblers will both be running features on the card. After
the "regular" racing concludes, fans will be treated to some bonus crash n'
smash action featuring an Enduro race, School Bus Figure Eight race and a
four/six cylinder demolition derby.
Saturday's action will feature an autograph session/concert ahead of pre-race
ceremonies and the 100-lappers for the Pro Trucks and Sportsman.
Presenting sponsors of this years charity racing include Blackwater
Irrigation, Curry's Roofing, Fellows Truck Brokers, Haddock Timber, Stew Smith
and Orlando Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep/Ram, Racecar Engineering, 97 County Radio,
Webb's Commercial Services, Enterprise Car Rental, Southern Air Compressor,
the Les and Judy Smout Foundation, Hoosier Tire, Coulter Motorsports, Sunoco
Race Fuels, Cintas, Steel Horse, Smokin' Jim's House of BBQ and CBS Sports
Radio Orlando AM 810 and FM 93.1.
Pro Truck pre-entries stand at around 20 with more expected for race weekend.
2014 Joey Coulter Fellows Truck Brokers Florida Pro Truck Series champion
Becca Monopoli of Lakeland is entered and certainly will be one of the
favorites. She'll be joined by several other Lakeland-area drivers including
Mica Williams, Kim Scheffler, Cody McDuffie and Raymond Lovelady. Veteran
driver Dave Pletcher of Clearwater has entered along with another veteran hot
shoe from Pinellas Park, Racin' Mason Love. Third generation drivers Donnie
Burkhalter of Groveland and Bartow's Steven King are entered along with
youngsters Cole Partelo of Largo, Eddie Lichtenberger, Jr. of Oviedo and Sam
Scott of Naples.
Desoto Speedway 2014 Pro Truck champion Danny Anderson of Bradenton will be a
big favorite too while Legend Car veteran Darin Coker of Palm Beach Gardens
will make a rare appearance in a "big" racing machine. Other pre-entries
include "Fabulous" Phil Ellis of Port Charlotte, Alva's Cody Allen, Tommy
Caveney of Mulberry and Billy Carlbert, Jr. from Palmetto.
Joey Coulter won last year's race but won't be in attendance at his own event
this year as he is on a pre-wedding family cruise that he and his fiance
Jessica Green could only book for this particular week. Three-time Charity
Pro Truck winner (2008, 2011, and 2012) Steve Darvilacs of Venice has not
indicated if he will have his truck ready in time to run the event.
Sportsman entries have been a bit slow to come in and most are expected to
by-pass the pre-entry and enter on race weekend although several top drivers
have already entered including Mulberry's Brandon Morris who is coming off a
huge win in one of the preliminary features held during the Snowball Derby
last weekend in Pensacola. Also expected are Sean Bass of Lake Hamilton
(whose grandfather Ernie Bass won several point championships during his
racing days at Auburndale), Young lead foot and racing ambassador Dylan Martin
of Lakeland, Dan Scott of Naples, Dora Thorne of Inverness and many more.
Several awards have been posted including a Hard Luck award for both races
sponsored by Rex Engineering of Titusville and a Half Way Leader award for
both big races put up courtesy of Troy McNabb and American Automotive. Troy
Thompson, Inc. Machine and Welding is sponsoring the Hard Charger awards for
both 100-lappers while the "Cool Move of the Race" award is being sponsored by
the Petersen family for the Sportsman race and Tony Carreno for the Trucks.
The Petersen family has also posted the "Missing Pieces" award for the
Sportsman while that same award is being sponsored in the Pro Truck race by
Robert Howell Photography. A "Calculated Move of the Race" award has been
posted in the Pro Truck event by Dannis and Dannis, Inc. The winner of the
Pro Truck event will also receive a beautiful winner's ring courtesy of
Thompson Jewelers of Orlando.
Auburndale Speedway will host a Thursday, December 11th, open practice session
from 5-9 pm with pit admission $10 per person.
Friday, December 12th, pit gates open at 11 am for Pro Trucks and Sportsman
and 12 pm for all other divisions racing that night. Practice will go from
1:30 pm until 5 pm followed by a tire scuff session for both the Pro Trucks
and Sportsman. Qualifying for the Bombers, Pro Trucks and Sportsman will
begin at 6 pm and racing will begin at 7:30 pm with Last Chance races (if
needed) followed by a 20 lap feature for the Scramblers and the 50 lap
headliner for the Bombers. After that, Moe Knauer and his Eve of Destruction
crew take over to present a 50 lap Enduro race and a School Bus Figure Eight
followed by a 4/6 cylinder Demolition Derby to cap off the evening. After the
racing is over a big Bar-B-Que and pit party will be held hosted by Smokin'
Jim's House of BBQ.
Pit gates open on Saturday, December 13th, at 1 pm with "Happy Hour" practice
for both the Pro Trucks and Sportsman from 2-4 pm followed by a mandatory
driver's meeting. An hour-long autograph session and concert will take place
from 5:15-6:15 pm followed by pre-race ceremonies at 6:30 pm. Racing gets
under way at 7 pm with the Les and Judy Smout Foundation Pro Truck 100. An
intermission will follow that event but it will include the first annual Big
Wheel race for the kids. Action then wraps up with the Coulter Motorsports
Charity 100 for the Sportsman cars.
Adult grandstand admission on Friday is just $10 while adult admission on
Saturday is only $12. However, if you bring your ticket stub from Friday's
races on Saturday, you'll get two dollars off the general admission price and
that means you can take in two full nights of racing for just $20. Kids aged
12 and under are free both nights. Weather is expected to be mostly clear but
cool both days with highs in the comfortable low-mid 60s but evening
temperatures will dip into the upper 40s and low 50s so make sure to dress
warm.
Among other things going on for the fans to help raise money for the families
will be raffles and a big silent auction, much bigger than in years past, with
some incredible items up for bid. Among those items is an autographed Garth
Brooks electric guitar, a Dale Earnhardt, Sr. custom bowling ball, a custom
signed Jameis Winston Florida State Seminoles championship helmet, a Tim Tebow
autographed football, an autographed Tony Stewart die cast car, a Miami
Dolphins jacket and signed mini-helmet, a Tampa Bay Bucs jacket, a Ricky
Craven signed die cast and photo, a signed Joey Coulter rear bumper cover and
a visor that both come with a t-shirt and 11 X 14 autographed framed
photographs of Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne,
Mark Martin, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards, Taylor Swift and New Orleans Saints
quarterback Drew Brees.
