  • From NSS Quarter Midgets to Trans Am

Daytona Beach native Bobby Kennedy has progressed from New Smyrna's quarter midget track to Pro Trucks to SCCA showroom stocks to V8 StockCars, to Grand Am and IMSA. This past weekend Bobby picked up his first podium in the Trans Am Series at Daytona driving the Bemco Fabrication Mustang.

Woody & crew at Bemco had the car well set up for DIS after two recent SCCA weekends where the car performed flawlessly. The car unloaded fast and stayed that way all week.

Bobby started sixth in the race behind 2013 Champ Cameron Lawrence in the factory Dodge Challenger, Adam Andretti, two time Champ and road racing legend Tommy Kendall in another factory Dodge, Ron Keith (Mike Cope Racing), and Steve Kent.

At the start Bobby quickly moved into the top five, and soon was running fourth behind Lawrence, Andretti, and Kendall. After a full course caution, Andretti had a tire go down, and Kendall had shifter linkage problems. Wally Dallenbach Jr had a great restart and moved into second with Kennedy about 5 seconds behind.

In the closing laps Bobby was catching Dallenbach at about 1 second per lap.
On the last lap Kennedy drafted Wally down the back straight at 175 mph and out braked him into the bus stop, then holding him off to the checker for a fine 2nd place in his first start in the Trans Am 2 class. Florida native Cameron Lawrence won the race and TA 2 championship in the Miller Racing dodge Challenger. Cameron, a twenty two year old UCF student has signed a two year deal to continue driving the Factory backed Dodge from Miller Racing. In 2015 he will again team with Tommy Kendall.

Kennedy Racing will contest about 1/2 of the 2015 Trans Am schedule, hitting the first three races at Sebring, Homestead and Road Atlanta. Reportedly, six of the twelve races will be televised next year.

The Trans Am 2 Cars are tube frame, glass bodied racers with about 500 HP and 2800# with driver. The Camaro's are powered by 6.2 liter LS3 Chevy's, the Dodge's are 6.4 liter EFI all aluminum motors by Arrow, who built the motors for the factory Vipers in IMSA. Bobby's Ford is powered by a 6.2 liter aluminum small block Ford with a Dart block and heads, and a Bo Laws carb. Byron Koury racing engines built the motor and it was STOUT. Bobby's data showed that they hit 182 mph in the tri-oval after accelerating from the bus stop in Nascar three at about 95 mph.

Bobby's car features a Howe Trans Am chassis, the Howe Mustang body, Byron Koury motor, jerico tranny and Winters Quick Change rear end. The suspension is a coilover three link with a watts link and Penske shocks and Wilwod brakes.

Bobby comes from a great racing family, dad Squeak has pro raced for 30 years in IMSA Camel GT, ARCA, Grand Am, SCCA, and the latest version of IMSA.

Thanks for all the cool detailed information. It is great to see this American Road Course Stock Car Series returning. Also cool that Trans Am greats Kendall and Dallenbach are returning to the Series. I'm gonna have to make it out to Sebring and Daytona next year and catch the action. Also awesome that there will be TV coverage next year too!
