DAYTONA DODGE FAMILY NIGHT FEATURES TWO 50 LAP RACES AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY
FORMER WINNER AND FORMER WINNING CREW CHIEF TEAM UP FOR UPCOMING GOVERNOR'S
CUP
There will be loads of racing and fun for the whole family as Daytona Dodge
presents Family Night this Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway. NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series action will feature a pair of 50-lap races for the
Open Modifieds and the Mini Stocks as well as feature events for the Sportsman
and Strictly Stock cars.
The evening is being sponsored by Daytona Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep-Ram located just
a few miles from New Smyrna Speedway at 1450 North Tomoka Farms Road in
Daytona Beach. General Manager Randy Dye is a former racer and a long-time
supporter of New Smyrna Speedway. Daytona Dodge Challengers are the pace cars
at New Smyrna Speedway this year.
During intermission Saturday night, there will be a Halloween costume contest
for the kids plus "trunk or treat" for the kids as drivers from the classes
competing will have candy and goodies for the kids on the front stretch. Once
the kids make their way back into the stands, Spectator Races are scheduled.
This is for street legal cars and trucks (no convertibles or motorcycles) and
each driver must have (or borrow) a helmet.
The Open Modifieds will be racing for just the fourth time during the regular
season and this week's race is a make-up event from a rainout several weeks
ago. New Smyrna's Jerry "The Hammer" Symons is unbeaten so far this year
winning the events held in April, on July 3rd as part of the Clyde Hart
Memorial and the Billy Gunn Memorial race held on July 26th. Despite winning
all three, Symons has just an eight point edge on Alan Bruns in points with
Ricky Moxley third, 11 markers back of Symons.
Pat Wells has opened up a 12 point edge over David Russell in the Mini Stock
class going into this week's 50-lap contest which should attract a good field
of cars. One driver who will be back in action will be "Mr. Mini Stock"
himself, Ted Vulpius, who has repaired his primary car from a crash a few
weeks back.
In the Sportsman class, Donny Williams is well on his way to another track
championship, leading D. J. Farr by 58 points going into this week's action.
Pit gates open Saturday afternoon at 3 pm with division practice from 4-5:45
pm. Grandstand gates open at 6 pm with qualifying for the Open Modifieds and
Mini Stocks at 6:05 pm. Racing starts at 7:30 pm with a 25-lap feature for
the Sportsman followed by the 50-lap run for the Mini Stocks. Following all
the fun at intermission and the Spectator Races, the Open Modifieds will run
their 50-lapper before the evening wraps up with a 20-lap run for the Strictly
Stocks.
Adult admission is $15 with all seniors (65+) and military members with valid
ID being admitted for $13. Kids 11 and under are free and all kids need to
make sure they are dressed up in their best Halloween costume for the costume
contest and "trunk or treat" at intermission.
It has been announced that a former winner of the Governor's Cup race has
teamed up with a former Governor's Cup winning crew chief for this years event
to be held at New Smyrna Speedway on Sunday afternoon, November 23rd.
Jeff Scofield will be behind the wheel of Tommy Sytsma's famous "Silver
Bullet" #77 for this years event. Scofield won the Governor's Cup race here
in 2006 and Sytsma was the winning crew chief for veteran driver Robert Hamke
when he won the event at Tampa's Golden Gate Speedway in 1977, passing the
legendary Ed Howe for the win with just a few laps to go. A big field of
entries is expected this year as the winner's purse now sits at $15,000.
