  • Dirt Tracking at Bubba - Sat 10-18-14 - nice night !!!

Good to be back after two weeks up North. Decided to do some dirt track watching tonight and headed up to BRP. Beautiful weather. Somewhat surprised at the lower than usual car count but the racing was as good as ever. One of those nights where you spend two hours trying to sleep after returning home but keep reliving the nights races over and over again in your mind. Still woke up this morn undecided which feature was the best. Four really good features with the E-Mods and Thunderstocks putting on some really great racing. T'stocks had Gene Posey, Jr #56 holding off many challenges throughout their 20 lapper after he had started 7th and went to the lead with some fantastic driving. The #33 of Gamble made several attempts to pass Posey,Jr with the best on lap 17 when he pulled up to Posey's door handle coming out of two. Posey still pulled away down the backstretch and held on for the victory with Gamble 2nd, and Fockler #22 3rd. E-Mods had a 20 lap caution free race with some great racing Shane Taylor #82 who started 3rd took the win over 18m Dave Markham Jr. Nichols #11 was 3rd. Is it true that the #15 of Austin Stroshal is only 12 years old? What a show he put on during the race. Great young driver. Modifieds went to Austin Sanders #64 while Nobles #18 made a late race pass over Crouse #9 for second. Hobby Stocks had some great looking cars in this class as well and the Elwoods took 1st and 2nd. #92 Rick winning and the 28e of Brandon finishing 2nd. 17f of Forsyth was the hard charger in this race but a late spin by him resulted in a third place finish. Car counts had Mods at 9, E-Mods at 10, V8 T'Stocks at 10, Hobby Stocks at 10 and Gladiators at 3 with #711 Teddy Morrison the winner.

    BRP continued - page #2

Once again I was really impressed with the announcing of Joe Dirt. There is not another like him as he hits on every single cylinder behind the mic. The PA system works great and the call of the races by Mr Dirt are second to none. The concession staff was also very friendly as well. Had another very good ZUBER dog. Btw why are they called Zuber's ??? All in all a very good night of racing at Bubba's and am looking forward to returning. Show started at 7:11 with an advertised start time of 7 which we found very good at a Florida dirt track. Show over at approx. 10:05. Plenty of action and good hard fought racing. Of interest to me was the starting spots of the winners. Mods #64 Austin Sanders started 6th, E-Mods #82 Shane Taylor started 3rd, V-8 T'Stocks Gene Posey Jr, started 7th, Hobby Stock's Rick Elwood started 5th. Even the glads Morrison started 3rd. Great handicapping. Nice sitting near the Posey Jr family. This family knows how to cheer. Well so much for now, we will return.....

The track is located in Zuber, hence the name, Zuber Dog.

Mike Peters gave the 1/4lb hot dog that name years ago, even before going back to dirt..
Yes, the track is in Zuber, a very well kept secret over the years..

RIP Jack Smith and Kim Brown. Many thanks for all you have done for our sport.

Mr. Denman, you are correct, handicapping is so important for a good show. The number of racers who feel entitled to the pole, and who should be able to cruise to an uncontested win, is a disappointment. You and I would rather see an exciting contest!

I have to brag on our TBARA. We had 31 cars last week, although 5 broke in practice and the heats, so only 26 started the feature. Our winner came from 13'th, and we had another rocket ship of a car that started last, battled to the lead, but spun in an incident. He went to the back again, and recovered to finish 4'th.

            Fans like passing!

Way back when Deland Raceway was going strong, myself and Wayne Handyside helped Jimmy Stroud with his cars. Once in a while Jim would race a Friday night show at Ocala. Jimmy would tell us after a Saturday night race at Deland, come over Monday night and change the rear end, because we are going to Zuber Internation next Friday night. Jimmy never called it Ocala Raceway.

Yes sir. DeLand Raceway was McGregor road, on the other side of 17-92 it was Lake Helen road.

Went to Deland many times on Sunday afternoons... Here's a shot of Jimmy Stroud and another of him (#61) going three-wide... Note that it was a tailgating-only crowd... no grandstands... pull your car up to the fence and watch... The track had natural banking for the turns as it was carved out of a valley between two small hills... The racing was really good there... You can see a few more good shots on my floridaracinghistory.com website...

Denman, did not mean to hi jack your thread. Dave and I, are like we see an old name from the past, it brings back great memories. How if we were together and Marty Little would show up "it was on"! LOL!
Keep your Observations coming, I really enjoy your view point. Thank you!

oneoff, boneman, announcer Dave and all

No problem with hijacking as I do not view as such. In fact I really enjoy hearing and reading about different track's history. When did DeLand close ? Were there two tracks in DeLand ? Also my first visit too Bubba's, Ocala or Zuber International was in the early 80's when I would drive to Zuber to watch the Sprints and the Southern Modifieds, which were a great looking group of cars with outstanding competition. I remember all those tires in the third turn and backstretch area on the dirt track. Also when the track went asphalt many years later I would drive to Ocala on Fridays to see the TBARA events there, some really fantastic racing. Boneman, TBARA has perhaps the best handicapping of any series I have watched, which goes back quite some time. Don't think I ever missed a Sprint show at Ocala when TBARA was racing the asphalt on Fridays and then Citrus on Saturdays. Announcer Dave, thanks for the photos, do you have any of the old tire banking at old Ocala dirt from way back when? Many thanks to Ocala 76 and oneoff for the answer to the Zuber dog question. Thanks all.....see you at the races !!!
