  • Governor's Cup Race at NSS now at $15,000 To Win

From Speed51 and New Smyrna Speedway

Super Late Model racers across North America have officially been challenged by New Smyrna Speedway Vice President Andrew Hart. That challenge could prove to be quite profitable for the winner of the Florida Governor’s Cup 200 on November 23.

Hart, the third-generation of management at the Florida coastline half-mile, is putting up $5,000 of his own cash to raise the winner’s purse of the 49th Annual Florida Governor’s Cup Super Late Model event to $15,000 in a challenge to the top Super Late Model racers to show their stuff in this year’s event.

“You think you’re the best? You want to be the best? Prove it at the Governor’s Cup,” said Hart. “The best-of-the-best in short track racing have already won the Governor’s Cup in its long, rich history. Some might argue that if you haven’t won the Governor’s Cup, you can’t become a legend. I want to see as many drivers as possible take me up on my $5,000 challenge to become a legend in this year’s Governor’s Cup on November 23.”

In its almost five decade history, the Florida Governor’s Cup has been won by such short track royalty as Dick Trickle, Mike Eddy, Bobby Gill, Wayne Anderson, Pete Orr, Ed Howe, Gary Balough and Freddy Fryer. In recent years, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series winner Erik Jones solidifed his place as a short track rising star with the 2011 Governor’s Cup win. Alabama racer Augie Grill won the 2012 and 2013 editions.

With the Governor’s Cup going green under the daytime sunshine at New Smyrna on Sunday, November 23, some big-time cash will be on the line as drivers jockey to add their name to the Gov Cup winner’s list.

“When you’ve won the Governor’s Cup, you’re in rare air,” added Hart. “We want to make this race a destination race for drivers from all over the map to come show what they’ve got against our local and regional racers here at New Smyrna. Only one driver can walk away with the $15,000, but I know there will be many drivers who want to try to take my cash.”

In addition, the Hart to Heart Breast Cancer Foundation at New Smyrna Speedway is offering a $1,000 bonus to the farthest tow of a Super Late Model competitor in this year’s Florida Governor’s Cup 200 Super Late Model event.

The 49th Annual Governor’s Cup 200 is the pinnacle of a full weekend of racing at New Smyrna Speedway. Also part of Governor’s Cup weekend will be a Pro Late Model 50-lapper as well as several New Smyrna local divisions and more.

Additional information on the 49th Annual Florida Governor’s Cup 200 will be announced in the coming days.

I LOVE the idea of running this on a Sunday Afternoon. Talk about old school! The only time I went to the GC200 at Golden Gate, it was run on a Sunday afternoon and it was a super day.

I am racing the day before, and may be at a banquet on Saturday night, then its off to NSS on Sunday....what a great weekend that is going to be.

I'll be coming from Connecticut but I doubt that will be the longest trip. If anyone from NSS is listening, please have more than a one hour practice session the day of the race this year, at the Derby we get 3 sessions a day for three days. This could only be good for the track, more tire & fuel purchases surely means more money for you guys, it also makes the field more competitive, this is why the Derby has 36 cars running within a half of a second of each other, which makes for much better racing. We were sitting around all day last year on Saturday when we could have been turning laps and making the cars better for a more competitive field. We are not all Augie Grill who can show up 10 minutes before the race and win. Also please figure out how to fit everyone on or around pit road if you are expecting more people than last year. There were three guys taking up four car spots each on pit road, limit the amount of space you can use up, you don't need a 30' tent on pit road for your car, its November. Then when we got to race time we couldn't fit everyone on pit road, I think someone was even pitted in the pit road entrance. The practice is a must, please fix this for this years schedule.

Boy are you right about the Sunday part. Saturday night pre lims plus a sprint car feature and the 200 on Sunday. We would leave after the feature and drive back to Tallahassee and usually got home by dark or shortly after. And who could fault what was probably one of the shadiest pits in racing.
