  • Orlando Speed World: Update 9/24/14

    From Donnie:

"I want to take a minute to address a few things regarding racing at OSW.

As you seen in a previous post, we will be doing a strictly stock race on Oct 7. This race is happening because Clean Cut Tree Service has stepped up and wants to make this happen. If this goes well, they will want to do several more of them over the next few months.

In addition, I have also been tossing around the idea of doing a combined SLM/PLM race every few weeks. I have talked to some drivers, and owners and they all seem to think it is possible. Before I move forward with this idea, we are going to do a few tests and see what needs to be done to make the PLM competitive with the SLM. The idea is to do these races on Sundays. Right now this is just an idea, so I am not going to get into what we will run with them, what the payouts will be, etc. It is too soon to get any of that out there, or even speculate about it.

Also, just so everyone is clear, I am only going to do what makes sense for the track as a whole. You are going to see other things on the schedule. You will see drifting, Autocross, Rally, Car shows, Driving Events, and more. You may not like what you see, but it is about the track as a whole. You would see Rocket launches if I thought it would aid in the overall health of the track.

I welcome comments on the above race format (SLM/PLM) and as I have said from day one you can also call or come by the track. I am here just about everyday.

    Thanks
    Donnie"

Dig up the old FAST Series rules for combining the 2 classes. They were able to somewhat equalize the SLM's, the PLM's and also the Limited LM's.

The show I saw at OSW with this package was very competitive and cars from each group spent time in the lead. In fact, all 3 styles were represented on the podium.

Whatever they did to even things out, worked from a fans perspective.

They also attracted enough cars to need a B-Main.... and THAT doesn't happen often.

      JM,

If it is forum-appropriate, I see no reason not to briefly list whatever event is coming up.

Car shows, Phil's rubber-ducky races, whatever, some will perhaps find an event interesting and attend.

Can you run Multi-Stage Rockets or is it Single Stage only? Last time you let the Jets run with us and they had an advantage because they are lighter and can take off from a standing start and get airborne faster but we make it up at Altitude, plus they're not really Rockets at all because they run on Jet Fuel and the fans come to see Rockets not those crap cans billowing black smoke like a Diesel. You said you don't wanna discuss payout but I know a lot of Rockets parked em because the payout was only posted on Spacebook and not here, are you going to post here? That's not really a payout question so hopefully you can clarify.

I wish them luck, but i'm skeptical of a sales pitch that includes " you may not like what you see".

What a shame this tree company should have done this at another track two classes running 50 lapper and 100 lapper and thats the only classes there going to race. osw not vary smart they could have added some other classes to go with this to make it a full night of raceing. no fans are going to show up for this because nobody is going to come out for this short program about a hour and half max with intermission LOL. and they wont know about it unless they facebook. how much is going to cost to get in? is osw going to charge there 30 to get in the pits. donnie doesnt care if it fails he said on facebook thier not the ones putting this on.

I think you are missing the fact that the tree company (really the people from Melbourne Motorsports Park it seems) are RENTING the track. When you rent the track for an event like this, generally the track charges those renting the track, collects their money and sits back and watches. Melbourne Motorsports Park has been having trouble getting the proper permits, so they decided to rent OSW. It's a win for OSW, they collect the money and do no work. Think about it a little more...

If you think you can do a better job, I would LOVE to see you put up the money needed to do so. Cmon! Go for it! Since you have all the answers and are so quick to criticize the people from Melbourne

For what it's worth, it doesn't look like Melbourne had a bad thing going on at all... Pretty decent number of people and cars for such a home grown backyard type operation... Impressive to me for what it is... Hell, at one point in the video, there is a 20 car field shown... If you think that's failing, your perception of reality is very tainted.

Well...both sides of this discussion are valid.

For the long term health of Speedworld, as well as spectator enjoyment, additional high end classes would certainly be a help.

On the other hand, big props go out to Melbourne Motorsports Park and the Tree Company (what the heck is the name of it so we can give 'em a little advertising?) for their financial support of OSW & the sport.

I would like a hundred bucks, but I will certainly pick up five if I see it lying on the ground...

The guys from Melbourne don't seem to have the experience with the higher divisions nor do they likely have the money to bring them in. What they are doing is great and works for them and on the larger scale stage that OSW can provide may even get better. I don't get the continuous need for people to pick everything that everyone does apart like they can do a better job. Get off your ass and support it. Its better than nothing and they may not be "real race cars" as everyone with their elitist mentality likes to put it, but more times than not, the grassroots style of racing puts on the best physical on track action.

Remember, money rules the world. Without money there is nothing anymore. It's real easy for people to forget that so I understand why so many people seem to have the "it would ve better if it was done this way" thought process but you have to think of it with a logical business mentality. If the money isnt there to make it happen, it physically can not happen. If this wasn't the case things would be a lot better everywhere in racing.
