Flag man working the spectator race was struck by a Chevy truck coming off of 4. It was awful saw it happen and it didn't look good. They performed CPR for a long time looks bad. The front of the truck suffered heavy damage. Praying for the family the victim and the driver that hit him.

It was Bud Howell he has been flagging for the TBARA. He was flagging Bronson today and was hit during a fan participation race when he was hit. Sadly he has passed.

I normally have a strong stomach, but seeing this made me really sick.
P/U truck lost control out of 4 and hit the flagman, Bud Howell, and nearly hit the announcer standing next to him. A simple 1 lap fan participation race is all.... gone very wrong. My prayers to Bud's family and friends..

I am sorry to hear of his passing! My heart goes out to his family and especially to the guy driving the truck. I am sure he is devastated. When Tr Fulks used to flag Fan's races at Desoto I would cringe with him in between the cars. RIP brother!!

So sorry to hear of Bud's passing. Had the chance to speak with this good humored man at several of the TBARA races this year and always was a pleasure. Great sense of humor. Always looked forward to a chat with Bud. Rest in peace Bud. Condolences to his family.....you will be missed.....

Saftey, needs t be looked at very closely. Thisvisva tragedy that should have not happened. At some point and time some one, group or even the state has to step in and over see safty aspects of a track or all tracks. Its clear to see leaving it up too track owners, tech officials, or the individual them selfs isnt cutting it on the safety side.My thoughts arent about the person who placed him self in harms way.My thought are about common sense, should we have another useless death without consequences to the track owners!

In NJ, ALL tracks are overseen by the state. While many believe that the State is over reaching into private business, they have a safety program and procedure protocol that any motorsports complex must follow.

All cars & safety items must pass a STATE inspection to compete rather than a track by track inspection (which can be almost non-existent at some Fla tracks). They have rules that cover things like mandatory ambulance & fire equipment must be on site, types of chemicals & quantities of fire extinguishers, driver safety gear, approved fuel cell mounting, etc.

What some may see as Government overreach, I see as saving racers & tracks from themselves.

First, tragic event, sorry for the victim and his loved ones...

Each of us make choices to pursue an path of enjoyment weighing the risks before we begin...even as a flagman. If it doesn't seem ok, we can do something else. Yes, it would be government over reach. I DO NOT want them protecting me from myself!

This is a very sad incident for all involved. Prayers go out to the family of the flagman as well as the driver and his family.
But i have a hard time understanding how the track allowed the flagman ( and announcer apparently ) to be in that position in the first place. There are designated and relatively safe locations for flagmen and announcers during a race, and standing in the infield isn't even in the top 20.
