  • Qualify or Not.....What if?

    Hi Folks,

I was reading through the thread about what seems to be, based on the responses, the obnoxious amount of time it took to qualify at VSP's Late Model show this past saturday. Wow, i would have been board out of my skull.
Jerry (Frasson) always has an agreeable response to items like this. I think since we come from the same era the feeling is mutual. Jerry, maybe you can help clarify this for me and maybe others might have some thoughts too.
When growing up in NY, they had a multi-state sanction or league known as "The All-Star Racing League". Each track involved had 1 or 2 drivers that represented their home track. Upon winning certain races throughout the year they would be automatically qualified for an entry into an ALL-STAR event.
If my memory serves me right. During an All-Star event all registered drivers had to pull a pill for heat races and qualify through the heat races. Those that did not make the cut had 1 or sometimes 2 last options. A consillation race for final position fill or a non-qualifiers for a reasonable purse with no entry into the main event.
The kicker was, that even though you qualified for the main, you had to line up on the front stretch with the other drivers and pull a pill for your starting position in the main. That really made for some interesting starting line ups.
I saw heavy hitters like Evans, Cook, Buzzie, Bodine, Troyer, etc starting deep in the field and work there way to the front. You talk about excitement! Especially on a 1/5 mile track. I think the race laps were 200.
We attend our local tracks for 2 reasons, the racing and entertainment. With a program as desribed above, that would be some serious racing for any division.
I understand about all the $$ involved, rules, restrictions, sponsors, etc.I ask this, is there someone out there in track promo land willing to step up and try a format like that for at least 1 night? I would love to see it.
Theres more to this that i could stack on but i just wanted to see where this might go.

Thats what we've been doing all year. It's a double edged sword. I won't allow qualifying at Ocala anymore to look out for our fans interest. On the flip side some drivers refuse to race if there's no qualifying. For both UDLMCS races we've had this year some drivers didn't show because of this. Some threatened not to come and still showed. I understand their side also they're concerned about tearing up cars if they have to come from the rear.

After racing for over 40+ years ,I've seen that happen and hear all the whys, but none of that covers up the fact that the best show for the fan is fastist cars need to work there way to the fount, not start there. I always liked line ups that were high point cars to the rear from a show stand point.
I did like the extra $ to the back to back winner if he had started dead last, after winning the week before,I made out well many times on that one,and the fans got a hell of a show.
        The fan is number one!

Sorry, the first post escape on me for unknown reason. Here's the follow up.

This is how they qualify for the Oxford 250, always a good field of cars, normally 80+ show up for the race. Pays 25,000$ to win + 100 $ per lap led. Can be a good payday. It was this past Monday(rain on Sunday) and Kevin Harvick won it with his own car he brought from down south.
