It was a general statement. Last year the same argument was made by the same people and there, as usual, was no resolution. The horse is dead! Reasonable people can agree that this isn't the "state championship" just like the "summer shootout" isn't actually a shootout. At least I don't think anyone has gotten shot. It is in Charlotte so there is always the chance I suppose.

Exactly! They can call it whatever they want. And I'm sure it will be a success. Like him or not, Yoho can promote with the best of them. The race on the 30th will be standing room only. Mark that. The house will be packed.

You're right Scott, my mistake. I didn't look at the date. Same thing applies though.

10-4, Yoho does seem to put the money up for his specials so he will probably have a nice purse for the "State Championship" too.
I wish it wasn't so far away from me (4+ hrs) so I could take in some of these shows.

As a kid, the Modifieds ran a true NY State Championship.

Syracuse only runs a couple times a year, one of them being Labor Day, during the State Fair on the same property.

No other tracks in the state raced that day, so drivers from all over NY came to race against each other, in front of fans from all over the state.

To have "your" home track driver win that race, was worth bragging rights for the year.

In local terms, only Lakeland USA should have been considered a State Championship type event.

That is so true BigBlock98, It is just a NAME. Just maybe gives it a little more prestige. the drivers like it and IM sure it will PAY big bucks also.

Plus NO one has called a Super Late Model race a state championship in 3 years or longer now EXCEPT Showtime Speedway. Yes I know Jimmy M will jump on here and say the Governor's Cup is the only State Championship. But as I have said before New Smyrna does not even use it in the name anymore. They refer it simply and proudly as the Gov. Cup weekend.

Because the Governor's Cup is, and always has been, *the* state championship race. It's called "respect for other tracks/promoters", which, you don't see a whole lot of any more. You don't "steal" the "state championship" moniker from a track that's held the event for what, 26 years, now (since '88?), and the event that's been run since 1963.

In November 1963, Frank Dery ran the first Florida State LM Championship at Golden Gate Speedway... At that time there were no other "big" LM races in the State of Florida until both the Snowball Derby (Pensacola) and the South Florida LM Championship (Hialeah) began a few years later. In 1965, the race at Golden Gate became known as the Florida Governor's Cup State LM Championship after then Gov. Haydon Burns commissioned the trophy which is still competed for each year at New Smyrna Speedway... Hence, the "real" State Championship race will be on November 22 at New Smyrna...

A lot of you folks need to learn your Florida short track history. Westerman's got it goin' on. That race at Golden Gate, St. Pete, and New Smyrna drew, and still draws, cars from all over the country.

I'll eat my words if *one* out-of-state car/driver shows up at Sunshi....I mean, *Showtime*, for the "prestigious state championship".

On another note....why *won't* Yoho work WITH New Smyrna and/or DeSoto to bring back the Triple Crown weekend (or vice-versa)? Now *that* would be a REAL "state chmapionship" weekend.

There already has been a driver from North Carolina there practice the past two Wednesday, said he run the PASS series.

You could just as easily bill it the Wisconsin State Championship, it would have the same weight.
Some day, the tracks in this state need to get together and re-produce some of the things that made racing such a huge sport. And one of those things was a real State Championship race with drivers from all over the state ( and often from out of state ) competing. The Governors Cup is as close as there is to a State Championship Race. But a St. Petersburg Championship trophy would still look good on the mantle.

Frasson, Im not real sure of his name, Im in the Drag tower on Wednesdays only know is that the number is 8 and he runs the PASS series. I will try and ask the guy who takes care of the oval for practice and see if i can find out his name for sure.
