  • A little Bowman Gray at East Bay

It was the type of audience response that most tracks dream about. Last Saturday night, most of the fans at East Bay were on their feet, and were either cheering for one side or booing for the other! Everyone was excited, everyone was loud, and I am sure most everyone was having a great time.

The East Bay sprint feature was the stage for a "throw down" between 3'rd generation driver A.J. Maddox and the track management. A.J., and the East Bay champion Billy Boyd, had lots of contact in the first lap of the heat, and it left A.J. in the second turn wall and out of the race. That incident, coupled with some long-term frustration among many people close to the scene, boiled over in the feature when A.J. climbed into third, and was accused of jumping a restart. Naturally, A.J. didn't see it that way, and refused to go to the rear of the field. Instead he mashed the gas (while under yellow) and was black-flagged.

After much discussion on the raceceiver, A.J. idled around and would not leave the track, despite a "blockade" of people trying to block the track and force him into the pit exit. Even a law enforcement joined the blockade at one point. A.J. pulled bluff after bluff of heading to the exit, and then turning back to the track for another lap. To the delight of the crowd, he waved at the fans to get on their feet and show him some love. Many responded too, and had a blast cheering for the bad boy, while booing for the heavy hand of track management!

I know it was serious business for those involved, but I didn't have a dog in the fight, so from my spot in the stands it was great fun. It was theater for us, and I found myself "booing" a track that I love and management I respect. Just a few hours earlier, we were all showing lots of appreciation for their celebration of the starters 75'th birthday. THAT was real! The non-sense during the sprints was just for fun, IMHO.

Who knows what happens next? Sometimes there is more to it than meets the eye, so let the chips fall where they may.

Haha, it was at least interesting. I'm not a fan of those antics though. Watching him tear around under yellow like an idiot while workers were on the track makes him to top level jackass to me!

I read a story several years ago where something like this happened.... but the offender wound up on his lid.

The promoter ordered that this car be taken off of the property RIGHT NOW.

He didn't mean to turn it over and tow it to the trailers. They dragged that car, still upside down, through the pits, and out to the side of the road in front of the track. Dumped it on the side of the road where the crew was all on its own to figure the rest out for themselves.

      Karma can be a BITCH.

By the way, one of the top 5 things every track needs, is a Hero and a Villain. Rivalries sell tickets. If you've ever been to Bowman Gray, it's evident every time the words Tim Brown or Junior Miller get mentioned.

10,000 people a week have an opinion about one or the other. The other 5000 people love/hate a different pair.

J-mac, the starter is "Rockin' Ronnie Lukoc (Sp?). If they had not given him a trophy for his 75'th, I would have never known. That guy waves the flags with the speed and energy of a 20 year old. Try it some time. He is in great shape!

Could not agree more. It IS supposed be a show after all. Who doesn't like a good bad guy to hate?

First, let me say that I am not trying to upset any Earnhardt Sr fans, and I am truly sad he is gone.

He was the quintessential "bad guy". He used to spin out Geoffry Bodini just to stay in practice for the other guys.

Fair enough--if the other guys (between them) couldn't figure out how to "handle it", they deserved to finish second--and frequently did.

But here is the deal: Somehow everyone decided he was a tough guy with a heart of gold. I just never could see that.

Sure there was a kindness or two along the way but to the end, I question the "heart of gold" thing.

Again, no offense to Big E fans.

I put a small video on my Facebook page of AJ going around the track officials, and a lap around the track.

I didn't video the first laps where AJ went around the track at high speeds after being blackflagged.

I'm like Boneman I didn't have a dog in this fight also but it was good entertainment.

I agree. It's like my old Boss used to say when asked who he pulled for in College football, "Alabama and anyone playing Auburn!" Big E was a great bad guy. I pulled for anyone but him. Really got pretty vanilla after he passed away. :-(

                      EDITED

What I really just don't care for is the stuff like what happened at Bowman this week. I honestly just can't even bring myself to understand why anyone would feel this is acceptable. Bump a guy, door slam him to let him know your mad or whatever. But when you go full throttle, head on at another competitor, to me that shows intent to injure... Just doesn't sit well with me. I guess I am in the minority on this one though...

Obviously wasn't at east bay, but as long as the guy didn't go after anyone I can understand it being entertaining, but there should still be penalties.

Who did that? Certainly not AJ in a Sprint Car.

To me, one of the "dirtiest" moves is to hook a guy in the RR quarter halfway down the backstretch.

That should result in a track "ban" for a month or three, IMO.
