THOMAS MAKES IT SEVEN DIFFERENT PRO LATE MODEL WINNERS AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY
NASCAR Whelan All-American Series racing action saw yet another new winner in
the Pro Late Model division and also a first time victor in the Mini Stock
class Saturday night.
18-year-old Tyler Thomas of Collinsville, OK became the seventh different Pro
Late Model winner in seven races after a wire to wire victory driving the Tim
Russell Driver Development entry. It was only Thomas' second race in an
asphalt Pro Late Model and he had the outside pole slot for the start of the
event. Thomas wasted little time in getting to the front and was never
seriously challenged the remaining distance. The strength of the field of
cars was evident as the race ran green to checker with all 11 starters still
running at the end and the leader less than half a lap ahead of the last place
car after 25 very quick laps.
Thomas took the checker several car lengths in front of Anthony Cataldi and
pole-sitter Chad Pierce who battled back from some early problems with a
"loose" race car to nab the final spot on the podium. Will Carroll was fourth
ahead of Rich Clouser while Cody Blair was sixth trailed by Ricky Anderson,
Zack Jarrell, Daniel Miller, Ricardo Flores and Chris Brannon. Dean Bramer
was hoping to make his first New Smyrna start in five years but problems in
warm-ups put his car in the trailer for the night.
The Mini Stock feature race took three tries to get things going and saw a big
pile-up on the second attempt that put race favorite Ted Vulpius into the
front stretch wall and eventually out of the event. Jeff White and Levi
Hammond also had damage to their machines but were able to continue.
David Russell led the first three laps before the final caution of the race
flew for a stalled Mark Broat in turn three. On the restart, Pat Wells took
over the top spot for a pair of laps then it was Russell back out front for
three more circuits before Tyler Simpson zipped by and assumed the point.
From there, Simpson had the car to beat as he pulled away to score his first
win of the year. Wells was second while White rallied back to take third with
Russell fading to a fourth place finish ahead of Jamie Dixson. Sixth went to
Brad Blanton in front of Hammond, Daniel Brown, Broat, Reid Chritiensen, and
Vulpius. Wells won the heat race.
Jarrett Korpi led all the way in scoring his sixth E-Modified feature win of
the year as this race also went the full 25 laps under green. Korpi finished
well ahead of Matthew Green, Jon Compagnone, Mike Dahm, Roger Benton, Jim
Higginbotham and Cody Blair. Korpi also won the heat.
The Super Stock feature saw Justin Spears lead the opening lap but it was
Garrett Hill the class of the field as he snared the front position on lap two
and never looked back in taking his second win of the year. The fourth lap
saw Spears and Becca Samsoe tangle while fighting for third spot. Both cars
spun and Mike Amato hit the turn three wall hard trying to avoid them. Joe
Gerard came along and smashed into Samsoe's stalled racer. All drivers were
OK but Samsoe, Amato and Gerard were done for the night.
The rest of the race was fairly uneventful as Hill easily ran off from second
place finisher Shannon Kelly. Third went to Preston Hunt followed by Gino
Tumminello and Mike Dahm. Rounding out the finishers were George Dahm, Warren
Schurr, Spears, Samsoe, Amato and Gerard. Kelly was the heat race victor.
Heat winner Warren Howie passed Jimmy Barron with two laps to go and sped to
his second win of the season in the Strictly Stocks. Barron held on for
second ahead of Dan Webb and Kenn Josephson.
