Duke fights off challengers for Bright house Challenge win at Desoto
      By SCOTT LOCKWOOD
      Desoto Speedway

On a night where he said his car wasn't even close to being perfect, T.J. Duke held off a series of challenges and led the final 62 laps of Saturday night's 100-lap Brighthouse Challenge Series feature event at Desoto Speedway.
Polesitter Anthony Sergi led the first 16 laps before being passed on a restart by George Gorham. Gorham would face a challenge from both Jesse Dutilly and Chris Fontaine, even getting tagged in the rear bumper several times by both drivers

Fontaine passed Gorham on the outside for the lead coming out of turn four and quickly stretched his lead before a debris caution on lap 31. Dutilly got to second on the restart, but a flat tire would send him to the rear of the field

Duke worked his way up to second and passed Fontaine for the lead lap 38. He would pace the field for the next several laps with Fontaine directly on his tail. Duke started inching away from Fontaine until the caution flew for third-place running Billy Bigley stopping in turn four.

Jeff Scofield, winner of a super late model event at Desoto last month, moved up to third on a lap 63 restart. Over the next 20 laps, Duke fought off several challenges from Fontaine and started stretching his lead before the caution came out again for Bigley's spin off turn four.

On another restart with nine laps to go, Duke and Fontaine ran side-by-side for a couple of laps before Duke finally got the edge. Duke would go unchallenged the rest of the way.

"I wouldn't say we were on a rail because we were actually a little bit off," Duke said in victory lane. "We expected to be a little bit better and I don't like winning races this way. I'd rather drive away from the field. This was a good experience and next time we come back we'll be better."

Fontaine, who said he was running about three-quarter throttle in an effort to save his tires for one last run at Duke, held off a late challenge from Scofield for second. Dutilly rallied to finish fourth, nipping Joe Boyd at the finish line.

In other action Saturday night, Joe Sumansky won the 25-lap Pure Stock feature; Jessica Ostrovskis won the Mini Stock feature; John Sarppraicone Jr. took the 30-lap Street Stock feature; Randy Johnson won the Pro 4 feature; Bradenton's Jordan Miller won the Rookie 4 feature and Palmetto's Billy Carlbert won the Mini Stock Figure 8.

Desoto Speedway is closed next weekend and will return to action on May 24.

Thanks to Desoto Speedway for a very good night of racing and for recognizing the moms in the crowd. It was nice watching the steady stream of fans driving in, haven't see that for a number of years. The crowd was very good.
But i have a couple of questions. Number 1, why don't the usual suspects in the BrightHouse series come to Desoto. David Rogers for instance. Just curious.
And, after a tv segment on Thursday seemed to have helped to bring out a big crowd ( many of them new to the track and the sport i would think ) why would Desoto decide to cave to NASCAR and close next Saturday night? I realize this has become the norm over the past few years, but in my opinion the short tracks need to develop their own shows and their own crowd. Many race fans don't pay much attention to NASCAR, so you're not doing them a favor by closing for NASCAR races. And believe me, NASCAR would never return that, or any other favor to the short tracks.
And most important, the new fans that showed up at Desoto last night probably liked what they saw and would have come out next week as well. Instead, they'll have to go back to doing what they always do on Saturday night and soon forget about Desoto.

Same old crap up there! They run all the support divisions before the headliner 100 lapper, which for Christ sake doesn't start until 10:00, are you kidding me!! Tons of cautions laps run waiting for cars to pit and come back, and why do they throw the caution when the cars are clearly off the track in the middle of the infield!

I saw a thread on here this week about running a good show and to that the late model feature should start before 9 at the latest. I saw a bunch of folks heading for exits early after the umpteenth caution. And say what you will, curse me, whatever, they wont be coming back!

Run some of them support races after the feature, hell a few of those cars were in multiple races, did I really need to see that over and over! The continued demise of asphalt racing in Florida. What a shame because they had a good field of cars and put on decent show in the last ten laps. Too bad many folks didn't get to see it.....

The idea of running the headline shows first has been debated long and loud. But the vast majority of fans won't stick aroiund for the lower classes if you run them last. That's why music concerts have opening acts. I don't mind seeing the lower class cars race first. And i think if you're going to have a figure 8 race, it should be the final race of the night. But that's just me.
Another thing that's been debated to death is endless cautions. There were a lot of yellows last night, and there are a lot of yellows in every short track race. I for one think there are far too many needless cautions and it's time the tracks step up and do something about it. Spinning out, and then parking on the track to bring out a caution, and suddenly being able to get your car re-started at the exact moment the yellow comes out needs to be stopped by officials. And a "2 or 3 cautions and you're DQd " rule should be on the books and ENFORCED. I know it's a judgement call to throw a caution for a 1 car spin, or 1 car scraping the wall and continuing, or one car having a flat tire and limping around back to the pit entrance or infield, but the officials need to start making those calls in the fans favor, not in the racers favor when ever possible.

              First of all

Thank you Linda for posting the results as quickly as you did. And Thank you to Jimmy, Critter and all involved in bringing back a track from the dead..............Now as for you oldtimer..........Your opinion matters but be glad you had a place to plant your a%# and see a show at the once DEAD Desoto. As far as Florida Racing is concerned.......its not gone. I am in California on buisness and decided to go to Madera speedway last night. The same track that was on TV last week with modifieds. The biggest field of cars was 8 -four cylinder junkers. Limited late models had 6.

I question whether Oldtimer was even there, if he was he would have known we had over a half an hour to 45 minute delay due to an injured driver and having to wait for EMS to respond. The last feature ended at just before 11:15 which if not for the injury delay the entire evenings races would have been finished by 10:45 we shoot for 10:30. And as far a bunch of folks leaving again I am not sure where you were but the stands were still pretty full when the checkers fell for the late model race. I stood in the breeze way with Denny after the races were over and received nothing but complements on the show. So Oldtimer I realize you can't please everyone but it sure seems like the we are doing a pretty good job so far.

                  My view

--run supers third, a lot of the guys travel 2-3 hours to get there, so give them a chance to get home before 2 in the morning

--fix the microphone so the fans can hear the interviews after the races. Rick does a good job, so let's at least hear all the words.

--Fontaine has way more patience then I do, duke drove him like crap, repeatedly.!

                  --great crowd!

                  Just my view....Vince

Thank you Vince. The issues you mentioned will all be addressed. Jimmy and Denny are unlike any owners I have worked with before. Be patient with us there are a lot more surprises in the near future...

OldTimer, are you serious? Demise? I guess you missed all the people that left after the Late Model Feature was COMPLETE. I was standing right next to Jimmy and Denny and there were NUMEROUS first time attendees who were so excited and couldn't wait to come back. I don't really think the end time was bad considering the LENGTHY DELAY in waiting for paramedics to arrive. I am excited to see what is in store for Desoto, I hope everyone has seen the huge improvements made in the short time since Jimmy and Denny took over

I see everyone complaining about too many cautions, running the LM's late, etc......

But NOBODY saying anything about the time it took for EMT's "to arrive".

This track is running without proper medical people on site??? You gotta be kidding me. That is 'Rex Guy' type of thinking. This needs fixing immediately. This isn't 1958 where you chucked an injured guy in the back of someone's station wagon for a trip to the crash house.

Not sure how it works in Manatee County, but from what insas told about Polk County is that they must have an ambulance on site for Little League Baseball games, but no such rule/law for a RACETRACK.....??????

                        WTF people.......

Jerry we have EMT's in the infield with the equipment they need. Even if you have an ambulance on site you cannot transport with it you have to wait for the local service.

The tracks we raced at & visited always had an ambulance on site. The only delays we had were if the ambulance had to transport someone, and the races could not resume until another was on the property.

                            Not the other way around.

EVERY track I've raced or visited that had an ambulance still had to wait for local service, while the injured were being treated at the track. On some injuries a Life Flight was requested. Life flight takes a while to get there, but quick to the trauma center. So the main thing to have is EMTs on station for treatment till the ambulance gets there.
As far as race schedule, I like the way its done at New Smyrna. 2 classes race, then intermission, then the feature of the night and followed by the final 2 classes. 5 Divisions with features only. Pill draw determines start and last winner starts the rear.

RIP Jack Smith and Kim Brown. Many thanks for all you have done for our sport.
