ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD BECOMES "FAMILY FRIENDLY" FRIDAY NIGHT

Orlando SpeedWorld will be hosting Family Night this Friday evening and the
racing action will feature a 35-lap $750 to win special for the Sportsman
    class.
This week, four adults can enter the grandstands for $44 plus each will get a
free hot dog and a free canned soda or bottled water. As usual, all kids aged
11 and under will get in free.
The Sportsman division has produced some of the best competition of the year
with Orlando's Earl "Junior" Beckner and Daniel Conlin, Jr. of St. Cloud
splitting the wins. These two drivers had a serious run-in during the last
event here and that spilled over to a recent race at New Smyrna Speedway.
This should make the racing this week even more interesting as Beckner, a wily
veteran, and Conlin, a youngster just in his second year in full-sized Stock
Cars, are both very aggressive on the track although there will be a host of
top drivers trying to get their first win of the year and keep the pair from
    repeating their early-season success.
Ted Helmes of Deltona has been one of the top runners so far this year as has
Steve Barnes of Orlando who has just repaired his machine after a bad wreck at
New Smyrna a few weeks ago. Ron Gustafson of Winter Springs has run well so
far this season and should be a factor along with the likes of Orlando
pyrotechnician Andy Nichols and Timmy Todd, Jr. of Kissimmee who seems to have
worked out the "bugs" in his sharp-looking new ride. Other drivers expected
to go for the cash this week include Justin Starr, Garrett Hill, Donny
Williams, Derrick Wood, Scott Garrity, Ted Head, Richard Fiore, Jr. along with
    several others.
Joining the Sportsman on this week's card will be the Super Stocks, Legend
Cars, Strictly Stocks, Four Cylinder Stocks and Bandoleros.
Pit gates open Friday afternoon at 4 pm, grandstands open at 6 pm with racing
    starting promptly at 8 pm.

This place SHOULD be packed! For any oval fan this is a deal you just can't beat! If I was there, I'd be at the track for this!

Forgive the ignorance--what, technically, is the difference between a sportsman and a late model?

Iron heads? 9:1? 2bbl? Stock clip?

Am strongly considering making this event.

        This just may......

This just may be one of the best races that has been to Orlando Speedworld in a long long time. The Sportsman cars are the most action around anymore. It is the class that a working man can afford to run and still be able to pay his bills too. Super Lates are just a rich kid's toy anymore. you know what I mean. My Daddy will buy me a new one, if I tear this one up!!!!!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again..... I REALLY miss the old Southern Sportsman Series.

An affordable, working mans class that would travel to all the best tracks around, very healthy fields, diverse appearing bodies, and a great policy that said the previous winner couldn't start any better than 12th. After qualifying (which I hate anyways), the most recent winner.... if in the top 12, started 12th at best. If he was 13th or worse, that's where he started.

The Sportsman class, when there are a bunch of them, can put on a great, 'Headliner' worthy show.

I agree Jerry. I was hoping that the FUPS deal would turn into something similar, but it just got ruined and wasn't very good from the start anyway. The sad part is that starting out the racers supported it and car counts were very good. They just offered a very unappealing product to the racer and it deteriorated from there. I'm afraid that with the FUPS failure that we will never see anything that resembles the old Southern Sportsman Series again.

I wouldn't rule out a Sportsman revival, Desoto has a lot of things planned i suspect.

I don't doubt that, Matt. In the meantime, any big Sportsman race paying a good purse at a WELL RUN TRACK (like this race) will draw a good field and be an entertaining show. If someone DOES want to start another Sportsman series they need to get Scott Jackman on board to show 'em how it's done, use the old Southern Sportsman Series format and maybe ask Don Nerone for the rights to the SSS name. If you build it (right), we will come (in droves)...

It seems to me that Todd Hutto was the driving force behind the SSS. When he sold it to Nerone, it went straight off of the cliff.

I'd don't see where it's an unobtainable goal to find a little extra cash to pay $1200-1500 to win a 'big' Sportsman race. Last year, OSW had a $1000 to win show, and I believe it was 28 cars that showed up to battle for it.

$750 isn't bad...... $1000 is better..... $1500 I think would pull fields of over 30.

I believe the math would take care of itself with all the extra entries.

And I'd surely be buying a ticket to the grandstands to go see it.

...and I'd be dragging my car and crew there to race in that event(s)....and as long as it's not at Adale or Showtime...

                        what?

Last weekend Bronson ran a 50 lapper for $1000 to win and only 8 sportsmen showed up- what are you guys talking about?

Well, there's always the free hot dog & coke!

Mr. Garrity, plans are to go see you race tomorrow evening!

                          Best of luck.

Bronson causes their own problems. You could pay $10K to win, and most racers wouldn't support it. They have no local base of cars, and it's just too far for most to go there.

As Scott pointed out, running at a 'well run track' is one of the keys to success. Neither Bronson or A-Dale are 'well run tracks'.

I'd like to see a Series that consists of 3 races each at OSW, Desoto, Citrus, and a 50 lapper at New Smyrna during Gov. Cup weekend.

Have each track put up $250 per event towards a point fund and pay the point leader $1000 for his efforts, with the rest of the top-5 splitting the other $1500.
